Prob got lucky and the timing didnt move when you removed crank pulley

and then as you say you were 180 degrees out putting the pins in which made you think it was damaged.

If its working fine just drive it and stop worrying!

Thanks to everybody, and especially to Boxa, for the constant encouragement. I do hope that the New throttle body might improve the MPG. Although the timing belt has only done 18k, in view of the fact it has been lashed by the shredding aux belt, I'm going to get a new one, together with a flywheel lock set.

The forum has helped me in the past and that's the whole point of being a member we all help each other to keep our freelanders running, I think you've made the right decision in replacing your cambelt perhaps do the whole kit then you can forget about it, you've done the Aux tensioner pulley and belt so that would be everything done and peace of mind the INA kits from GSF are rated as very good and its what I used Thumbs Up

So, I have got the new timing belt. Quinton Hazel, and the new crank bolt and timing lock kit have arrived. I noticed that the locking kit does not come with any nuts. I can use the bolts from the alternator, but would anybody know what size bolts I need to get ? Thanks in advance.

Not bolts, but nuts, to enable me to use the alternator bolts.

The locking tool uses the starter motor studs/washers and nuts.

Dont do what I did and drop one of the nuts into the bellhousing.

Several hours with an endoscope and eventually I was lucky to fish it out with a magnet.


Correction : Starter is held by 3 bolts. No nuts. So you would have to find some nuts and washers to hold the locking tool. I'd forgotten what I had done in the past.  Jules

Thanks Jules. My studs just came in from the back of the bell housing into the threaded starter, so no nuts.

I had the same problem but fortunatelyi have lots of nuts and bolt about so just cobbled something up

Hows it running ?

yes - youre correct - I was wrong. Obviously thinking of some other vehicle's starter motor. Banging Head Jules

So, New belt, tensioner, etc fitted. Lower crank cover back on. Big crank nut done up to 70Nm+60degrees.
Crank sensor refitted. Pins and flywheel thing out. Turned the engine a couple of times by hand.......... Rain stopped play.
Tomorrow, I will check that the tensioner pointer is still in the right place, and tighten that bolt up. Fit the Aux belt, and the rest of the bits, and keep you posted.

The pins in the kit are great, but the other bit that you bolt on to lock the flywheel is a pain. It's impossible to see if it has locked on. Still, done now.

All done. Running like a dream. Lucky Jim managed to avoid any damage due to the unorthodox method of cam bolt removal. (Don't do this at home)
So, new timing belt, tensioner, pulley, and water pump .
New Aux belt.
New throttle sensor.

Now to sort out those parking sensors........

Thanks to everybody who followed, and offered help, advice, and encouragement . It was very much appreciated . If anybody local wants to borrow the flywheel locking kit, and the pins, give me a shout.
