Thanks for coming back to me Nodge. Because I didn't remove the timing belt, I can't have altered the timing can I ? The cam and crankshaft have always remained connected throughout what I have done today, have they not ? That does not mean that the timing belt has not jumped a couple of notches when the problem first happened. Really appreciate you input and help.

On this engine, you don't need to remove the timing belt to alter the timing, as the crank pulley is held in the correct timing location by friction. Simply releasing the bolt is enough to allow the timing to slip out of optimal position, which is why it's important to fit the timing pins, which hold the cam and crank pulleys in correct alignment.

Hopefully it's not slipped enough to prevent the the engine from running. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

To time the crank you need to take the starter motor off and use the narrow timing pin to get the crank in the right position and then use a locking tool on the starter ring teeth to hold the crank whilst you torque up the crankshaft bolt, after checking the camshaft timing.
The timing pin can bend if you try and do it without locking the crankshaft. Jules

Yikes. The thing is I have already tried to start it with the old knackered crank sensor. So if I have inadvertently altered the timing, then the chances are I have already done the damage Shocked
I might as well fit the sensor now, and give it a go. Thanks for all the advice and support.

So I stuck on the new crank sensor, turns but no start. Did a hard reset but still the same. I still have the engine light on when I put the ignition on.
Any ideas on next step
Do I need to clear codes ?
Have I knackered all the valves ?
Do I need to get the kit to lock the cam, crank and flywheel, or is it too late for that ?
Should I just buy a box of matches ?

you need to check the timing before you do anything else remove starter and cam belt cover and check with timing pins or drill bits this is your first step to diagnose the problem these are a simple engine to work on with plenty of room just take your time and you will get to the bottom of the problem there are plenty of people here on the forum who will give you any advice you need to get you up and running again Very Happy

Thanks Boxa. I'm hoping that if I have inadvertently altered the timing that I have not damaged the valves. I will do a bit of googling to see how I can set up to check the timing. My main concern is that I will have damaged the valves. although turning over the car yesterday, I did not see to get any plinking metallic sound. Thanks for your response.

As the MIL is staying lit, I'd be checking to see what codes are causing it.
It may be nothing important (preventing engine start), but it could also be something important. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Thanks folks. I will have a go at you tube, as I'm struggling with google. I assume that if I can set the camshaft using an 8mm pin, I will then have to figure out what position the crank should be in.
