Perez is a MUCH better No 2 driver for Red Bull.

Great to see Perez back with top team. He's really earned his chance. Andy

I don't see any broken rules, Jackie Stewart received his knighthood well after he moved to Switzerland in 1968, neither is he the only person receiving a knighthood who lives abroad, it seems Hamilton is in the overseas list not the UK home list and there's quite a few tex exiles in that list over the years.
I don't like the idea of sports people receiving high honours whilst competing however that hurdle was jumped some years ago, though it can backfire when whilst still competing they get involved in drug cheating whether true or false the papers will find them guilty until maybe proved innocent. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I remember seeing Lewis Hamilton in a GP2 race where following an incident that left him trailing the field, he overtook car after car, in quick succession, to regain his position.
It was very impressive and I knew then he was a special driver, as he went on to win the GP2 Championship, in his first and only year in that category.

I have found a clip and other info -- It was in Turkey

I just repeat my earlier post.
Lewis Hamilton's progress through the GP2 field that day, in Turkey, was brought to my notice by someone who was a Race Engineer to another driver in GP2 that day. He thought that the exceptional driving was worth pointing out, and I believe he was right in spotting these early signs of talent. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Hamilton is an exceptional driver. That is worth celebrating as these things aren't usually achieved without a lot of hard work from the sports person and their team.
I'd like to think he is able to do something with his knighthood that benefits others in some way.
I dont't know, but maybe he already funds a foundation for something or does a load of charity work. Anyone know ? Jules

"As well as Black Lives Matter, Hamilton also discussed the Hamilton Commission, the programme set up in his name to increase diversity in motorsport, the power of sport to bring positive change, electric cars and animal rights."

I suppose the big problem for motorsport in attracting young talent from ethnic backgrounds is that it is a very expensive sport- youngsters need a lot of financial support from somewhere. Jules

I agree with Jules, as you see from a previous post of mine (then replying to Dartman)

Unfortunately, no matter how good you are, during critical times you need lots of money behind you, either from your family or a good sponsor.

There is a trap that as a driver, even if you are good, you can get into. Sponsor's will only back you if you can get into a top team and provide lots of publicity, on the other hand, most teams will only hire you if you have the financial backing behind you.

Many Team Managers, and Race Engineers, have successful careers after running out of money and/or sponsors after a reasonably successful driving career.

I am familiar with this type of experience, the Team Manager/Race Engineer is a (younger) relative of mine.
After a very successful Go-Kart racing start, won a years Scholarship at Renaults Single Seat Academy in France (including Formula Renault Race Season), but at the end failed to manage to get sponsorship to coincide with a team offer.
However he went back to university, got an Motor Engineering Degree, and has many good years in the Motor Racing Industry. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I think that team managers and principals who raced just weren't good enough, most admit it, Bernie, Frank William's to name a couple. The only one I can think of who went the other way was Graham Hill, started as a mechanic and made it to a double WDC, Jack Brabham possibly went from mechanic but not a team mechanic to WDC then team owner driver.
Hamilton is an odd one out, no money but had a punt taken on him by Ron Dennis, Ron's no fool so Hamilton must have impressed for him to have sponsored him via the junior ranks, despite his superior car he managed to string together 6 WDC'S with one blip and against a 4 times WDC in a faster illegal car with a good organised team with considerable money.
F1 is about money but you have to be good to use that money, and to win 7 WDC'S he's really good, probably exceptional and deserves his reward possibly more than others, irrespective that some of his off track and woke activities tend to put people off. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Surely eradicating the Klan, taking a public stand against racism, is an activity worthy of recognition? Or do you consider there is no reason to take action against the Klan, as does Donny boy?

He is an exceptional driver, and uses his profile to do a lot of good in the world. Past British WDC holders have focussed on getting Censored , getting laid and supporting their drug dealers. Hamilton could do worse. MY11 SD4 SE Auto
