bought these off the bay to see if they would perform and last better than the rubbish Halogen HB3 Bulbs

work ok, straight swap, no flickering or any other issues.

I have read up on how LED bulbs perform with the projector lenses, and that light projection is not as good so when I get the chance I will get out after dark to see what they are like. I just thought that with the amount of HB3 that have blown on my Ewok and now my FL2, for the price Id give the LED a punt.

Ill report back once ive tried them out properly.

Even if I just leave these in over the remaining summer months/lighter evenings and then swap back to HB3 for autumn & winter driving it may save me £30 every 2 months

At that price it is worth a try, but my gut feel is that they will not be any good as it looks like the projector setup is based on a precise point source of light which is focused accordingly. If the light source is not in this precise position the light output will be poor & wrong.

First impressions aren't the best for projection but ive not tried in the pitch black yet.

Ive tried all sorts of bulbs (although admittedly not the Phillips x-treme or Nightbreakers) and they have all either just blown or have exploded at some point.

IMO it seems to point towards a problem between LR and HB3 but what that problem is I have no idea.

This looks interesting, after driving my second vehicle with bi-xenons the standard lights look very dim.

Please update as soon as you can. I heard it will be quite dark around 2am tomorrow morning

I think these will be crap for beam spread and distance. The signature drls are super bright. Maybe activate you CCF so that the rear tail lights come on with drls. Like the signatures I don't think they will illuminate much distance wise. Then when it's dark you can use the HB3 halogen bulbs. auto lights are off anyway mate.

its just an experiment to satisfy my curiosity more than anything as distance/spread projection doesn't seem that great on initial attempts (and other peoples posts) but nothing ventured nothing gained and its only a couple of pennies.

As previously experienced by others and 3/4 expected the LED bulbs are a complete and total failure at night.
Although I did pass a few police cars late on Saturday night and didn't get pulled....just couldn't see where I was going

Thank you for this post. I drove a Saab 9.5 for the past eight years. It had Xenon head lamps. Now the halogen lamps in the Freelander are a bit dim. :!: Your Experiment saves me expense and sweat. Thank you.

Thanks for the update. No real suprise but a worth while experiment.

They were really the 1st LED bulbs I'd seen for HB3 that weren't stupid prices.
So only £8 lost.....
I'm sure in due course that someone in China will produce an LED HB3 that actually works well.

Brilliant results, so much better than the candle flicker that was standard halogens
mot passed, never flashed, and as same bulb is dipped and main great bright lighting all the time

I wasted $60 buying some 5000 LM Leds with built in ballasts. They performed really well. Only problem was that I couldn't close the headlamp unit again - they were too long.

Since then I've been loookjng for smaller units and have even considered making my own heat sink with PC parts. I have an after market HID kit fitted snugglyinside the unit but the light cutoff isn't great.

Today I bought a pair of proper FL Xenons!

ok so now there have been some interesting developments.....

After the failed LED experiment one of the Halogen bulbs blew again, so I replaced both headlamp bulbs with Halfords 120% brighter ones.

Now I knew they wouldn't last for ever, but as they were BOGOF they didn't cost anymore than standard filament ones.

As it turned out they have lasted almost a whole 2.5 months........... not that good really especially as I haven't been using auto lights and only using sidelights or DRL where I could. But I wasn't really that surprised.

One blew 2 evenings ago. So I went to Halfords after work yesterday to get replacements only to be told they no longer sell HB3 bulbs if they are to be fitted to LR/RR as the bulbs keep exploding.

Off to the LR dealer as I was going to be driving later last night and needed it sorted. £36 for 2 bulbs. I fitted them on the forecourt...... 1 Halfords bulb had exploded completely (again!) and the other had cooled, melted blob of glass hanging off it so would have blown last night anyway.

But what was the most interesting part was that during a discussion with the parts guy and one of the techs from the shopfloor.... it transpires that LR are aware of places like Halfords no longer selling HB3 bulbs to LR owners and are currently investigating the cause of the bulbs blowing so frequently

I wonder if this can be confirmed or not ?
