United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Bali Blue

LR have been steadily rising their prices for sometime now as shown by my current vehicle which, whilst not having the off-road credentials of the fl2, is by far a much more superior vehicle and cheaper than the fl2 I was considering. The move to discovery sport would suggest a major price increase which will be out of reach of many fl2 owners. I was hoping that in three years time I would be considering the next fl2 replacement to replace my x3 - maybe I won't be in a financial position to do so.

Nb - I like the front of the new disco sport but that rear end / rear quarter is hideous!! Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black
Gone - 2014 BMW X3 M Sport Space Grey, faultless!
Gone - 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Bali Blue with xenons
Gone - 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Rimini Red with bodykit

4x4 drivers in the UK are not JLRs target market. They are out to win over the growing middle class in India , China etc. who see LR as an 'Aspirational brand' that lets them be one up on their neighbours. The vast majority of sales are overseas and the Landy brigade in the UK are probably seen as a conservative distraction. Take a look at the Evoque adverts on the LR site , not a muddy field or towed caravan in sight but lots of metropolitan chic (whatever that is).
Part of the marketing for such a brand is to increase prices so that its perceived as a a real premium product with prices to match, low volumes and high margins is as good as high volume /low margins !
The bit about importing LRs into the UK from overseas plants in one of the articles adds weight to the idea of LR becoming a 'Brand' rather than a product.

As they say on the other side of the pond 'just my two cents'

Kia and Hyundai have no soul !

I happen to agree with the rear end being hideous. One of the reasons I love the land rover is because of its load capability in the rear. The rear ends of the evoque, even the new full range rover has a sloping roof which will decrease loading space potential. Such a waste.

Land rover have always pushed their prices upwards and then slotted a new product into the resultant gap. The new defender range will probably slot into the price point the freelander currently sits in.

Nor does the Honda CRV - I wouldn't be able to live with one of these cars for more than a few months no matter how reliable and economical they may be. I just hope that there is a Discovery model in my price range when it arrives. GONE - '07 TD4 GS manual Zermatt Silver

I would love a new Freelander or Disco 4, but the facts are that they are too expensive for me to justify. I love the brand, and would stay if I could, but my Freelander has been too unreliable and having let me down badly on a recent family holiday it has to go before the warranty expires in September.
So options are Large hatchback (Mondeo Titanium X Sport or Octavia VRS) or more likely as I prefer a higher seating position and some winter capability a 4 x 4 body style...sorry SUV Rolling Eyes

Having been supplied a Nissan X trail hire car by Land Rover warranty dept, I was impressed with the light off roading I did, the road manners and size of the interior. What let it down was the antiquated styling. Yes Nissan lacks the soul of a Land Rover, but beggars can't be choosers.
In July the X trail 3rd generation will hit the UK, with all the bells and whistles it will be around 28K. It is clearly based on the Qashqai but is much larger and has a 7 seat option. The Qashqai was 2014 car of the year so it should be good.
I am awaiting my launch invite from the local dealer...

The Nissan looks a nice car, I know a fella who is the local Nissan dealership manager, I might go and have a look at one when they come out.

I fancy the new Freelander replacement but as has been said before, if the base model is 30 grand then that rules it out for me. I read a while back there was talk of it being around 25 grand. If the price is too high I might start looking at the Nissan or BMW. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

X-Trail has a 1350Kg tow limit on the auto, so if you tow think again. Unless they change the box, haven't done for at least 10 years. There are many other cars with a restriction of lower tow weight limit with the auto box. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Thanks Dartman - useful info Thumbs Up
Thankfully I never intend to get into shed dragging so tow limit won't be a factor.

I'm seriously considering pre ordering a new fl3/disco sport. Ill have to discuss it with the dealer as to whether I can do this with no financial penalty if the released car is naff/unsuitable, At work

Interesting comments. This is the beginning of the end as far as Land Rover is concerned. The company should take note of Aldi's and Lidl's marketing successes. There is no brand loyalty these days. JLR models will become too expensive and people will quite happily switch to Kia or Hyundai. How on earth is the average working person going to be able to afford to buy a Land Rover vehicle? Are they producing these vehicles to satisfy themselves? I buy my other vehicles on ebay for next to nothing, and they are more reliable that my Freelander 2!
