United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Manual Santorini Black

I have done 2 trips from Plymouth - Cardiff now, both trips stopping once or twice. . The first time I got 46mpg at the pump fill up (which was only 0.1mpg out from the onboard computer) and today I did it, and it actually managed 50mpg at the pump. I couldn't actually believe it. I was doing just under 60mph most of the way up. Amazing for a 4x4 in td4 2007 model. I could understand it if it was 2012, but not 2007!!! just shows what you can get if you drive economically.
Like other posts here, though I shant be doing that every time, the boredom hits in after 20 minutes haha

Hi all,
So I've had the car for just over 2 months and i've only done 300 miles.. lots and lots and lots of very short trips.. so unsurprisingly my mpg is no where near the 30+ that seems to be the average.. Mines around 21 !

Though previous car also averaged about 22 for the same trips, so not too bad Smile

On the plus side..
When going to work one morning i came around a corner to find the road flooded, i was able to carry straight on. Where as in my previous car (SLK) i'd either have to detour, or turn it in to a submarine! Also the wife loves the heated windscreen, apparently it saves her hands from getting cold (i assume when scraping the frost off, not when shes driving!)

Did a 60 mile drive and just before setting off, I reset the trip counter. I was astonished to see my average mpg was 57.2. Had cruise control set at 50mph, driving immediately behind one of those really tall HGV. It was a 70mph motorway.

Slow and boring but seeing 57.2mpg made it worthwhile. I usually achieve an average of 35mpg when travelling 70mph.

Had my SD4 auto for about 3 weeks - mix of country roads & town driving plus one 400 mile round trip mostly motorway at 70'ish and trip computer showing overall avge of 35.6
Am sure as mentioned above if was a wee bit lighter on the pedal would get a few more mpg but am more than happy since the same trips on my previous pick up would have only been about 30 mpg at best

I wish I could get those results.

Normally around 32mpg in a gently driven TD4 manual. Took out a TD4 manual and an SD4 auto around exactly the same test route, both starting from cold, driven just the same. Auto returned 26.9, manual around 30.9.

I drive pretty gently and pretty much stick to the limits. I know that the hills in Devon and Cornwall can hurt MPG, but what does it take to get to get some of the figures that people are getting?

Tigger - 2007 TD4 with 91,000 on the clock - I get around 28-29mpg from TD4 manual over about 200 miles each week on purely town work. regularly get 40-42mpg on a38 up and back to Exeter. 45mpg if I go further up to Bristol, I'm not an expert but I don't have the air con on, I lift off early and coast in gear up to traffic lights to try to anticipate them changing so I don't have to stop. very gentle accelerating and smooth gear changes, and cruising about 60mph on the A38, Hardly use more than 10-20% throttle when pulling away unless of an urgent need to do so. I also regularly use Forte Diesel Treatment and premium diesel from BP to keep the fuel system clean etc

Think its just a combination of all these little things this that gives good results. Hope this helps Smile

Thanks for the ideas there. I shall try going without A/C for one thing...

I found this on youtube back alongt to support the extra mpg with BP Ultimate. It could have been staged and isn't scientific but who knows.

My MPG records for the past 2+ years are on line for all to see (see sig below). Presently showing 33.3 on the dash - which is pretty average all the time I have had it. I notice the newer models on here can be more economical. Maybe the Gen 4 Haldex gives an improvement. I have used 2SO for the past 15-16 months too.

Just thought I'd chip in and let you know how the ed4 compares with real world mpg.
My usual driving which is 80% town with a few B roads is returning a rather good 38.7 I'm sure I could improve this but I do like to get my foot down!
After completing several long motorway trips I seem to be averaging 44.2, this is driving at my usual 70-80mph
If I drop the speed a little to 65-70mph this goes up to around the 46mpg mark.
I do tend to always use bp ultimate or shell v power nitro fuel so this could be helping the figures.
Pretty happy overall.

I have a 2013 td4 s manual that has done 3000miles.

have averaged over 36mpg last 600miles and the most i have had it was 45mpg.

the 36mpg is long distance at motorway speeds

45mpg is long distance dual carraige way at 60 ish very light on throttle!

[i]"A work colleague and I like to dream up plausible, yet ridiculous theories, May I use this one?! "

There is clear and unassailable logic behind the well documented factet that our Landies in Cornwall always return better mpg than elsewhere in the country.
Cornwall simply has more downhill roads than elsewhere because all roads in Cornwall go down to the sea eventually - simple! We spend far more time going down hence greater economy, wheras in Scotland and dire places like that they spend most of their days driving up - hills, mountains and that sort of stuff - just name me a decent mountain in Cornwall - case proved m'lord....
