Was your old starter bench tested, to see a fault could be found ? Jules |

No, and it's possible the starter was fine and that this was a grounding issue all along... |

And the originally recommended place to connect the extra ground cable from the battery is….

"Engine earths" refers to ground cables between the engine itself and the battery? If these were bad, could it cause a weak spark or otherwise explain the ignition problems I'm still having? |

Is this the "engine earth" mentioned by jules? |

It could be. I used one of the starter motor mounting bolts. Mine was a manual gearbox so might not have had the bolt that Jules with his auto box had available. |

Gasmam, I'm thinking this is exactly what my problem is. The new starter and extra ground cable (4 AWG) help (I've gone from no crank to crank+slow start), but I probably have damage inside the positive cable. I'm thinking of replacing it with a 2 AWG or even 1/0 AWG cable...do you remember which you used? I'm seeing wildly different current capacities for each gauge. |

Yes that's what I've done as well. I figure if the "engine earth" had problems and was causing a weak spark, I'd be seeing other symptoms too. So perhaps it's the positive cable to the starter... Last edited by Marcus97 on 14th Feb 2025 11:34 pm. Edited 1 time in total |

I believe it could. Its easy to test - run a jump lead from engine to Neg battery terminal - thus bypassing all the engine to chassis earths. Jules |
