If I understand Bobupndown correctly the sucess of every great F1 driver is not down to their ability but to being in the team with the best car/technology.

Those of us of a certain age will recall the career of champion jockey Lester Piggott who won over 4,000 races. He was obviously a man of talent and conviction but by being a winner he was always able to ride the best horses and get the most out of them. Sounds familiar? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

You have to remember that in his rookie year, Lewis Hamilton beat his team mate Fernando Aolonso.
Hung like Einstein, smart as a horse.

It is Sports PERSONALITY of the year. But people seem to vote for the most successful sports person and ignore their personallity.

Multiple world champions in any sport obviously need the right tools to do the job but above all they need Talent, skill and tenacity, Lewis has these qualities in spades Thumbs Up

Well this made me laugh ...

Hey, I know I got da Covid,
and I have to stay hid'
just like Perez and Stroll did.

Yesterday I watched the qualy,
Bottas moved up the grid tree,
Who's this guy in car 63.

It's all about the Merc man,
anyone could drive that can
even my old man, or my nan.

When I talk to 'two toes'
about my contract woes
I know he'll let me goes.

I feel my life is getting crapper,
my fashion doesn't make me look dapper,
will I ever make it as a rapper ?

I did like the reference to Toto Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

When you form a team to win, you need the best you can get in all the skills. If I had Mercedes money and determination to win , I would hire Hamilton as a driver, without any hesitation or doubts. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

To get the right tools you've got to be good in the poor tools, George Russel has had poor tools for two years but impressed, Albon and Ghastly were given good tools but haven't impressed, Vettel impressed in reasonable tools and then apparently impressed in good tools only be found out in poor tools and shown up by a rookie who makes it look like an average to good tool. Basically if you want to succeed in F1 you need to destroy your team mate with whatever tool you have. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Unfortunately, no matter how good you are, during critical times you need lots of money behind you, either from your family or a good sponsor.

There is a trap that as a driver, even if you are good, you can get into. Sponsor's will only back you if you can get into a top team and provide lots of publicity, on the other hand, most teams will only hire you if you have the financial backing behind you.

Many Team Managers, and Race Engineers, have successful careers after running out of money and/or sponsors after a reasonably successful driving career. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
