Armco was never designed for a head on crash, it is designed to allow a vehicle to rub down it in the event of an angled impact, the head on impact of an F1 car at 140 mph is far greater than a 44 ton truck leaving a motorway at 60 mph and hitting the barrier, though normally the support posts gradually fail to lessen the point load. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Interesting piece in Private Eye about Saint Marcus - seems like a lot of others he set up (or was advised to by his financial team, agents etc) a separate 'image rights' company some years ago into which his advertising deals and other club income from the use of his image accumulates. Being a company there are benefits by only having such income subjected to lower corporate rate tax.
About 18 months ago that company had accumulated profits, not income, of £3.5m and this figure will no doubt increase even more given the way his image has since taken off. The tax saving for himself, and consequently the amount going to the Treasury has been considerable, probably enough to have funded the whole school meals scheme.
Although I applaud Saint Marcus for speaking out, there are two sides to every argument

I think that the TV pictures do not allow us to truly appreciate how fast these cars are going. The deceleration involved in hitting a barrier almost head on must be colossal.

Also, sometimes we forget that the Kinetic Energy they carry is proportional to the square of the speed. (K.E. = 1/2 m v2),
That can do a lot of damage to whatever you hit, and your own car trying to adsorb it.

These cars accelerate extremely quickly to speeds over 200mph.

Even when in the 'going slow' in the pit lane they are travelling at 50mph. You have to be brave to work on these cars during the race.

PS (post above?) not sure what Marcus Radford has to do with F1? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Presuminably everyone he's been in close contact with will have to self isolate individually - that will affect a lot of the team I'd have thought. Jules

F1 have a very intensive testing routine for Covid19 so all of his contacts will be rigorously tested, Thursday to Sunday and I suspect Hamilton himself will be retested just in case it was a false positive. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

So to be cynical maybe Hamilton's results are more to do with machine than ability? 🤔 Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I first noticed Lewis Hamilton in GP2 (2006).
At times he was noticeably faster than the other drivers. In Turkey, for example, after a spin, he drove back up the field from 18th to finish 2nd.

The GP2 cars were more or less identical and very fast.
Quote The GP2 format was conceived by Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore, Designed to make racing affordable for the teams and to make it a better training ground for life in Formula One, GP2 made it mandatory for all of the teams to use the same chassis, engine and tyre supplier so that true driver ability is reflected.

Hamilton won his first and only GP2 Championship in 2006.

As for now, watch how he controls his pace, and looks after the car and tyres, and still wins. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

..... and rarely has a F1 car in front of him ? no dirty air, although he is 'punching a hole' in clean air.

It's only practice, it has thrown up wobblies before, Bottas usually reigns top on Fridays, Hamilton on Saturdays and Sundays, today Bottas had a damaged car the in 2nd practice his quickest was disallowed for track limits, it is a track that no one has used before in F1 as a total track. The proof will be Sunday and though Russell is quicker in practice it doesn't mean he is the same or quicker than Hamilton or that the car will enable anyone to win, that was so then Bottas would be a lot closer to Hamilton on points, if Russell wins on Sunday then we may have another Hamiltonesque driver and if he is lucky in team selection he is young enough to beat Hamilton's records, however let's wait until the fat lady sings on Sunday. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
