I somehow think that if the turbo noise is as irritating as you say and the engine is definitely not as powerful then there is a problem.
Power may be slightly down on the new TD4 but torque has improved so should in theory be on par or better.
I would ask the dealer to check all piping associated with the turbo for leaks, it could be a whistle caused by an air leak, and the air leak the cause of a drop in power.
No harm in checking it out. Wink

Hi, thanks for everyone's replies.
Have driven car quite a bit now, 500 miles to be precise Smile
1) turbo whistle can be heard above radio (vol setting 12) on acceleration. And, yeah I do find it annoying cos it's a cheap nasty noise that my 2008 didn't make.
2) definately new car not as powerful- understand this is due to new engine?
3) gear thing... Best way to describe this is to have a go yourself- do 50-60mph on straight level road, maintain speed (light pressure on accelerator) place left hand on gear stick, ease off gas, gear lever twitches slightly. Ok so I'm a freak! But none of my cars have ever done that. It's nothing major compared to the turbo irritation.
Thinking of taking it to TVLR for a second opinion.
What would you guys do? Should I just shut up and be thankful my ears are young enough to hear the whistle? Wink

If you are not happy with the dealer, if it were me I would do as you have suggested and take it to TVLR and just get them to take it up the road with you, they will at least give you a second opinion and put your mind at rest, the thing is the more you think about it the more you listen for it and it spirals from there. I had a vibration issue with my old one. It was felt through the entire body. Even empty passenger seat would vibrate big time.

I pushed them to get the car replaced with a new one. If you are not happy, and think that's not normal, then push them to get the car replaced. 2010 Freelander 2 Select TD4 auto....gone

Update!
Ok, so I've done nearly 1000 miles in Lloyd. The turbo whistle is still there, getting louder too. I'm still not convinced that I have all the power too.
Spoke to the guys at TVLR and they've booked him in to be dismantled on Wednesday. So will report when they've had a look.

The turbo whistle... Read other posts on this one. It makes me furious! I've just spent 34k on this car for it to make a cheap nasty noise. I'm so disapointed. Sad((

The young lads with their Subaru's pay out good money to have their turbo make a racket, think its called a dump valve, sounds like a fart when you change gear, just the new FL2 farts all the time. I was only wrong once and thats when I thought I was but wasnt.

I love the sound of a proper turbo! But mine sounds awful. No deep grrrrrr or even a land rover grrrrprrrrr it's more of a wssssssss.
The subaru crowd would wee themselves at the sound of my turbo! Rolling with laughter
I'm 100% confident TVLR will get to the bottom of it Smile Thumbs Up

Rolling with laughter
haha
mildred's revenge! Yeah!
I made the Lloyd team at Carlisle promise they would find her a good home. I was always so nice to her. Giving her a bath and nice polish... Only ever shouted at her once... Even that was for her own good! It's not a good look being towed out of muddy field by a 1965 Massey fergusson.
Smile
going to bath Lloyd now

No overly noisy turbo on ours, perhaps you have a leak in one of the turbo hoses?

Have you got any where with your whistling turbo? Picked up an SD4 on saturday and it has the turbo whistle. Loud enough to bring on a headache on a long trip.

I got mine replaced with 2011 TD4, and agree turbo can be heard to whine while driving 120 -150 km/h. However the car has normal power, so I thşnk that's normal with mine. 2010 Freelander 2 Select TD4 auto....gone
