Bought one of these a couple of years back, not the cheapest but by far the best i've had, never liked having to mow the lawn but it really does a good job and is a pleasure to use. I thought a mower was just a mower but but it really backs up the statement "You get what you pay for"

Most important thing is the engine so go for a Honda or Briggs and Stratton powered machine.
Do get self driving - you can get cheap petrol mowers that don't drive any wheels - not worth it.

A Honda mower will last forever (and a bit)

I also have this one. Takes me 10min to cut lawn. More than twice that time with a Flymo type mower.
Just squeeze the lever and follow the mower! Very Happy

I have a honda lawnmower engine on a powered floor sweeper, its an elderly thing that I bought for £40 on fleabay, yet it starts everytime first pull...unless the last user forgot to turn off the fuel tap. In that case you have to take the plug out for a few minutes otherwise it will not start no matter how many times you pull the string or how much you swear at and kick it.

They only work well on a really good lawn cut very regularly once if not twice a week. Even then at the start and end of the season the lawn will probably need scarifying to get the thatch/moss and dead grass out otherwise in a couple of years the lawn will start to look really rough.

In general pointers re petrol mowers;

Fine lawn & want stripes- Cylinder mower with roller
Not so fine lawn left a little longer for kids to play on etc but want stripes - Rotary with rear roller
As above but no stripes - Rotary with 4 wheels

Self powered i.e. pulls itself along only really needed on a heavy good quality metal decked 21" rotary (Honda/Hayter/John Deere) these often have leccy start.

Most rotary's have plastic decks so don't need it & are pull start

At the end of the day its a case of how big the lawn is & your budget that decide.
