United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Bali Blue

Quentin Wilson was on one of the news channels a few weeks ago and suggested the 'start the car with one key/fob' and 'lock the car with the other' idea........ was put well and truely in his place when the news reader asked whether this would void your insurance policy if someone put the window through and drove off 'with the keys in'. Thumbs Up

Re: Webasto or Eberspacher

Hi! I am going to install a parking heater no my FR2 diesel. I have contacted a Bosch service point and asked about fitting a Webasto heater. They replied that they did not have Webasto installation schemes for FR2, which I found pretty weird. Instead of Webasto they offered me a similar Eberspacher product also with 5kW output. They told, if I insisted, they could, of course, install Webasto as well, but since there are no installation instructions from the manufacturer. So, should I go for Eberspacher? I have heard that both systems are good, but Webasto is more silent, consumes less battery power and are more common, which is a factor to be considered with regard to service, spare parts etc. Any opinions? Thanks! Smile

Sorry cannot help to compare as we have only ever used Eberspacher, as for the fitting of them if they want the work they will fit one. It is suprising how many vehicles have them especially in the transport industry, I expect when CG gets his chicks delivered they are heated for transport, not as much as the heat they will get when he sells them though Laughing Even the sandwich vans that travel around the business parks have them to keep the saugerolls warm even the Florist local to me has one in his delivery van. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

The drivers in the trucks that collect the chucks all have cab heaters as without them they have to leave the truck engines ticking over to keep the cab warmed while they are waiting to load/sleeping between shifts.

baby chick delivery trucks do have heaters to to keep the little ones at 30 degrees C.

My tractors have an unused bung in the side of the engine block incase you need to fit an electric engine heater. not needed in UK At work

And in Romania too, but not as standard. Only as an option, on request.
I have it on my car together with heated front screen and heated water jets. It is called "Winter packet".
It is a Fuel Fired Booster Heater rated at about 5kW.
Still, it hasn't a supplementary remote control, but it automatically kick in when exterior temperature drops below 5 deg. Celsius and in about 3-4 minutes the air blown inside becomes nicelly warm, because it heats the water from cooling circuit. Also the engine heats up more quickly.

Also here in Switzerland (not on"base" models) only those with the "Winter Packet" like my Newport model and operates as Alex has said.

Alex - do you get the smell of diesel fuel inside your FL2 Question Just recently when mine kicks-in there's a smell of diesel, and if I use the screen wash I can smell that as well. Didn't happen before. I'm wondering what's influencing this to happen - any ideas anyone Question

It smells of diesel because the exhust fumes from the FBH come through from the engine bay area - quite normal Thumbs Up

I've got the burnt diesel smell only first time, probably when the system initiated from new.
And a lot of white smoke too, maybe because it took a while to prime itself and start burning.
But after that never, or almost never, maybe just an "idea of smell" sometimes. Smile
The exhaust is just in the back of the front right wheel and maybe because of that it is easy for the exhaust fumes to be absorbed by the ventilation, being favorised by the wind and air circulation outside the car.
But I verified for a couple of times, by sticking the hand in front of the FFBH exaust, during its functioning on maximum power, and the exhaust fumes are odorless. Just some condensation on the hand, but no smelly hand. Smile Oh, and just a slightly cooked hand one time. Laughing
I don't know if it is related with the quality of diesel used (I am using regular diesel, not premium) or by the fact that I am using from new 2T oil addition to the diesel and the burning byproducts are very little...

Thanks for the feedback - mine is now stinking so it's off to the dealer.

Doc
It is not normal. When the diesel engine is running we do not get any smell from that into the cabin interior. The aux-heater is a separate functioning unit and previously it did not smell in operation, so the current stink is abnormal and at the least requires investigation.

The smell of burnt diesel generally appears only when the combustion process is incomplete.
The incomplete burning could appear when insufficient air (oxigen) is supplied.
By the design of the FFBH, the air is supplied by a small electric turbine.
Also, there is no sensor to measure the correct air/fuel ratio for a proper dosage of diesel, when air is insufficient.
So, in my opinion, if a problem is certain/diagnosed, either the air supply is partialy blocked or the electric motor of the small turbine is not function properly generating that incomplete flux of air and therefore incomplete burn and constant smell.
I am posting a doc for reference:
