Clunk in rear quarter

I have read quite a few posts about rattle problems on the FL2, and have had a fair few of my own. I consider myself an expert these days on removing and refitting trim panels! Sticky back felt is my best friend, one you have found the rattle, this stuff is great at curing them.

Except this one! I have an occasional clunk in the back near side quarter of the car, it sounds like something clunking against the under-body of the car. I am beginning to suspect the anti-roll bar or suspension (I have ready about a suspension twang elsewhere on this forum).

Just wondered if anyone had experienced something similar. Sometimes the clunk seems to move, which is why I suspect it is the body of the car that is transmitting the noise. Any advice chaps would be appreciated.

Neil.

others have said they required to have a suspension mounting "bung" (rubber bit on top? I think thats the word for them) replaced with a larger "bung"

In true LR style I am not sure if they are available yet though????

I believe they are available. However you'd better confirm it is the suspension before you go for those rubber mounts. I recently found that I could hear a rattle from the rear quarter and discovered it is the rear door misaligned.

i had the same issue on the right front and it was diagnosed as a sway bar bolt. Part on order now...i will let you know if that fixes the problem.

My car is in the shop right now for the 7500 mile service + software update. I also have the same noise problem, they are checking into it...

I'll let you know the outcome...

Well my FL2 paid a visit to the dealer yesterday to have a look (or rather a listen) to my clunk, as well as a buzzing in the dashboard.

I am pleased to say in the 40 odd miles since it went in, the clunk and the buzzing have both gone. Apparently, the clunk was rectified with the suspension mounting fix mentioned in the post.

Interestingly enough, the loan car they gave me also had exactly the same noise. Must be pretty common.

Thanks to those who contributed to this post!

Sad It's a sad day. The clunk/knocking is back. It lasted a few days after the dealer did the suspension fix but has returned.

It has since been back, and they have had another look. Sure enough, they couldn't find anything. Went for a test drive with them and it didn't make the noise (but then it is hit and miss). Soon as I set off from the dealer....you guessed it...clunk, it was back.

I am running out of patience with the problem to be honest, had a good look myself, had all the rear trim out and it made no difference, still had the noise.

Anyone else still suffering with something similar? Also, does anyone know how I can get LR to have a proper look at it, rather than just the dealer. Having paid a lot of cash for the car, I want it to be right.

You did not say what had caused the buzzing noise around the dash area.

I have this noise and cannot trace it.

Do you know what or where it came from?

Sadly, they didn't tell me how they found it. I guess they dropped the glove box out and tightened all the cable bundles up.

Buzzing around the Dash area

Thanks n4ewg.

I will wait a few days to see if there are any other suggestions from the forum, and then try yours.

Getting the glove box out is fairly easy anyway.

Simply open the glove box and on on side inside you will see a cut out, if you feel round the opposite side, find where the cut out is an push inwards. The cut out has the knob on it that stops the glove box from falling out!. With the cut out depressed, open the glove box further and you should feel the knob come out from behind the dash.

When you have this side out, the other side is similar but without the cut out, although you will now be able to flex the side of the glove box to get that side out.

Once both are free, detach the restraining cable and pull the glove box from the bottom to pull it out of the pivot.

Hope this helps chap.

just an idea.......but have you checked :

1) your spare wheel is correctly secured and that there are no loose fittings or tools around the wheel, eg the jack or wheel bolt wrench ?

2) rear seats & head rests - properly locked back ?

3) rear seat belt mechanism - OK ?

4) hard cover in the boot above the spare wheel - secured OK ?

Does this mean you only hear it when there's a passenger on board ?
If yes, I assume that the weight of the passenger releases the suspension of the left back wheel a bit.

Maybe this will help you further.

My rear suspension (I'm assuming) gets clunkier going over bumps downhill. It's not exactly silent on the flat/uphill but it does seem worse downhill. It's not a metallic clank like exhaust hitting floorpan, more clunk like rubber bush wear. I think it will need to go in to be looked at, but I'm expecting that they'll say everything seems to be in order.
I'm interested in this oversized suspension bush that's been mentioned before - that could make sense in my case.

The only time my Freelander 2 has the clunk is when I back out of my driveway. When I get to the point where my concrete driveway hits the tarmac of the road (there is a nice incline that my Bow down Mustang always drags on unless I take it at an angle) it makes the clunk. I carry a gun because I can't carry a cop.
