I do remember back in the day, that a tuning BMC A enthusiast (Clive Trickey) brought 7 high profile cam shafts from BMC special Tuning, at Abindon.......all 7 had all been machined differently!! those were the days. Dave DAVE. |

Gosh - the hours I spent as a penniless student in the 70s dreamily reading copies of Car & Car Conversions and trying to keep my rusty mini on the road. We thought we looked very cool though

I’ve still got the copy of when Dave did a ‘Clinic’ on my car (see website www.willfly.net) before the upgrades. Dave used to be a regular contributor to the se7ens list email forum along with Dave ‘Oilyhands’ Andrews of DVAPower based in MK who has fettled more K series engines than I’ve had hot dinners. He did the original upgrade and rebuild on mine. The clinic involved a session on the rollers at Emerald in Brixton at the time together with a drive on Chobham test track with me driving the camera car Roy

When a naturally aspirated engine is tuned, it pushed the torque curve up the rev range, making it have a narrower power band. The idea of the close ratio box, was to stop the engine dropping out of its new narrower power band on the up change. This keeps the engine "on cam" so acceleration is maintained. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Yep, I can answer that one as I have one in the Caterham. Most Caterhams come with a 5 speed Ford Type 9 gearbox, the 6 speed is an option. In a 5 speed the ratio of 4th gear is 1:1 and 5th is 0.92:1. 1:1 means that the output shaft is rotating at the same speed as the engine. 0.92:1 means the output is rotating faster than the input so at 70 mph your revs drop by about 500-700rpm. Now the 6 speed Caterham box has a 6th gear which is 1:1 which means your engine is revving at the same speed at 70mph as a 5 speed box in 4th. The advantage of a close ratio box is that you have 6 gears in the space of 4 which give you better acceleration because the rev drop between gears is about 500rpm which means that the engine stays 'on cam' or at the best point in its power curve between gears. The disadvantage is higher revs (hence more noise and worse fuel consumption) at speed and possibly a more limited top speed depending on power and rev limit. Once way of overcoming this is to replace the differential from a 3.92 to a 3.62 ratio which brings the revs back down without losing the spacing between gears which is what my car has. It also has a Quaife ATB LSD, which isn't a locking diff but it slips less than an open diff. Roy
