I much prefer to use a specialist tuner. Not a person who claims to be brilliant at mapping everything Thumbs Up

Can anyone else remember when a remap consisted of changing the needle in your SU carburetor, skimming the head and perhaps fitting a high lift cam and stronger valve springs? None of this software nonsense.

Oh yes - A series engine tuning according to David Vizard - LCB exhaust, rebored to 1300cc or 1340cc if you dared, big valves, double springs, ported and polished head and upgrade to twin SUs internally filed by hand.

Jules.

Rover 1.8 k series in a Caterham. Started life at 128bhp, piper 285h cams, Jenvey throttle bodies, big valve VVC head without the VVC gubbins, Scholar block with heat shrunk Peugeot diesel liners, forged pistons and steel rods. Now about 215bhp at 8000rpm. It did have a new Emerald M3d Ecu to replace the Rover one. Mapped by Dave Walker of CCC fame for you folk old enough to remember that magazine. Happy with my SD4 power and torque. If fuel consumption could be improved with a remap then fine. I don’t have a lead foot in the FL2 just in the Caterham. Perfect combination of cars. www.willfly.net Roy

I do remember back in the day, that a tuning BMC A enthusiast (Clive Trickey) brought 7 high profile cam shafts from
BMC special Tuning, at Abindon.......all 7 had all been machined differently!!
those were the days. Laughing

Gosh - the hours I spent as a penniless student in the 70s dreamily reading copies of Car & Car Conversions and trying to keep my rusty mini on the road. We thought we looked very cool though Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

I’ve still got the copy of when Dave did a ‘Clinic’ on my car (see website www.willfly.net) before the upgrades. Dave used to be a regular contributor to the se7ens list email forum along with Dave ‘Oilyhands’ Andrews of DVAPower based in MK who has fettled more K series engines than I’ve had hot dinners. He did the original upgrade and rebuild on mine. The clinic involved a session on the rollers at Emerald in Brixton at the time together with a drive on Chobham test track with me driving the camera car Very Happy Roy

I never really understood what a "close ratio gearbox did". Any offers? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

When a naturally aspirated engine is tuned, it pushed the torque curve up the rev range, making it have a narrower power band. The idea of the close ratio box, was to stop the engine dropping out of its new narrower power band on the up change. This keeps the engine "on cam" so acceleration is maintained. Yep, I can answer that one as I have one in the Caterham. Most Caterhams come with a 5 speed Ford Type 9 gearbox, the 6 speed is an option. In a 5 speed the ratio of 4th gear is 1:1 and 5th is 0.92:1. 1:1 means that the output shaft is rotating at the same speed as the engine. 0.92:1 means the output is rotating faster than the input so at 70 mph your revs drop by about 500-700rpm. Now the 6 speed Caterham box has a 6th gear which is 1:1 which means your engine is revving at the same speed at 70mph as a 5 speed box in 4th. The advantage of a close ratio box is that you have 6 gears in the space of 4 which give you better acceleration because the rev drop between gears is about 500rpm which means that the engine stays 'on cam' or at the best point in its power curve between gears. The disadvantage is higher revs (hence more noise and worse fuel consumption) at speed and possibly a more limited top speed depending on power and rev limit. Once way of overcoming this is to replace the differential from a 3.92 to a 3.62 ratio which brings the revs back down without losing the spacing between gears which is what my car has. It also has a Quaife ATB LSD, which isn't a locking diff but it slips less than an open diff. Roy

Ditto! I had a yellow ‘78 Clubman as my first car, which ended up with a 1275 lump in it. Happy days! 2010 HSE TD4 Lago Grey
