Freelander 2 HST Upper & Lower Bumper Grilles

Hiya guys!

Newby here!

Looking to change my grilles to black.

I've tried to do my research on here first, and I understand that the top grille is attached to the bumper and you either
respray it in situ, replace the whole bumper or use the "hacksaw" method. I'm fine with that unless there is another way?

If I go with the respray any tips, or any bodyshops you recommend near Newbury, Berkshire or Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire?

Secondly, the Lower Bumper Grill. I see these are easily bought on eBay etc and brand new. But are these easy to replace? Or does the bumper have to come off again??? This I can't find anywhere???

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Does anyone know if the lower grill can be easily attached or does the whole bumper need to come off???

The HST bumper grille is only fitted with body tape. Careful use with a heat gun, or a hairdryer if you must, and the bond will become soft enough to remove the grille and surround. This is how I did mine. Fitted it back with tigerseal after scraping all the tape away.

Oh, and I changed the badges to chrome/black too. Really makes a difference.

I was lucky. The lower grille was already painted black from the factory.
The HST grille (Genuine part) was bought at one of the Land Rover shows and fitted exactly how Land Rover fitted them at Halewood - chopping out the original grille and fitting the new HST item with the body tape . Cheap and easy.
I ran around like this for a few months until I found the HST bumper corners and lip, and rear skirt on eBay , but they were Santorini black - not Sumatra black . I fitted them anyway using Tigerseal , as the contrast between the colours wasn't that noticeable unless you really looked for it - and again ran around like this for 12 months. The original front bumper was damaged when I bought it so I was never 100% happy with it anyway.
I managed to get a brand new bumper locally dirt cheap , but wrong colour. No problem. Complete rear bumper and skirt from a Dynamic - exactly the same as the HST but again the wrong colour. Then I found the HST side skirts - again wrong colour. I hatched a plan to fit the HST parts to the new front bumper, then get the whole lot resprayed Sumatra Black, but without the HST grille, then fit it all to the vehicle in one afternoon. See below how it turned out.

Again , ran round for a few months before deciding to remove the HST grille from my original bumper and fit that instead. I also decided that I wanted it to be painted satin black to contrast with the Sumatra Black. Removed the grille using a heat gun, washed it thoroughly gunk to remove any greasy deposits, the washed it in soapy water to make sure it was 100% dirt and grease free. Popped to local motor factors, picked up some plastic primer and satin black paint and sprayed it up.Then fitted with the body tape.

Yes, you can get the black lower grilles on eBay. However, they are plastic welded in, which means taking off the entire bumper, grinding the plastic off , removing the grille, then tiger sealing the new one in place. Too much faffing about.
Better to loosen the lower screws, remove the centre bib part. You should then be able to move the lower bumper just enough to slide some cardboard up behind the grille to be able to paint it in situ after a bit of bumper masking.

I know I've gone on a bit - typing while drinking lager does that - but I'm on holiday at the moment and it's the only time of the year I actually have a drink !!
