The modern Metric system (MKS) is not so young.

Unfortunately for myself and my classmates we did our science at the time (in the 1950s) of the change from the old CGS units to the new MKS units. By the time you added in the Imperial system FPS units, which we had to learn as well, remembering the conversion factors became very confusing.

MKS Metre Kilogram Second
CGS Centimetre Gram Second
FPS Foot Pound Second

PS we still haven't really gone metric, my timber still comes in 1.8m lengths.
PPS My FL2 does about 33mpg most of the time. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

And occasionally I have been known to use a pencil with a nail indent made on it to transfer a measurement......

We use what we need to at the time Rolling with laughter Regards

There use to be a shop near me who sold timber in imperial lengths and the section with one dimension imperial and the other metric. It got a bit confusing asking for a bit of wood in feet, toes and inches long and Xmm x Y" . Unsurprisingly the shop went out of business.

Does anyone know if a person is as thick as two short planks what the dimension of the plank is in either system?

During a dicussion at college comparing imperial with metric one student thought it impressive to describe his manhood as 6 inches, while another thought that 150 millimetres sounded even more impressive, but one female student said she preferred the equestrian system - she measured it in hands!

Why is it when for donkeys years we have been buying fuel meaured in litres that the fuel consumption figures are given in miles per gallon. Don't land Rover know that we stopped using gallons years ago? Surely the fuel computer should give consumption in miles per 10 litres, then we wouldn't have to mess about converting the gallons to litres. Get up to date Land Rover and ditch this outdated measure that we no longer trade in.

It is possible to change the display to show metric readings, well I can on mine anyway! I always do when in Europe. MY 2013 SD GS Auto

Most recent readout from yesterday's run (Bristol to London), 130 miles or so at an average speed of 61mph. Cruise set most of the way - pretty pleased with that in MY13 SD4 auto.

Was this wind assisted by yesterday's westerly gale, if so what was the average on the way back?

I have a hard job to exceed 40mpg in any condition, except downhill. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Couldn't tell you, sorry, as that leg was part of a longer run over a couple of days (Southampton to Bristol, then to Barmouth and back, then Bristol to London).

However, on the Bristol to Barmouth leg and back (so 150 miles each way along Welsh A-roads) I got 41mpg out but only 38mpg back - right foot was a bit heavier on the return journey though.

On a long motorway run I tend to get anywhere from 39-42mpg. Was surprised to get 45.1 - with two of us in the car, a full boot and I always carry a full size spare wheel. Got roof rails fitted too. Tyres at 32psi, checked 'em before setting out.

I'd also just filled up with Tesco diesel before leaving Bristol. Although, the previous tank on the way down had been Shell V-power diesel. I tend to run a tank of premium through the car every 4 or 5 fills, and I'm convinced I get my best mpg immediately after doing that.

(Should add that these figures are only going on what the dash display says, so can't comment on accuracy in real terms!)

By doing tank to tank fill-ups, and comparing with GPS readings, I think that mpg readout is about 2mpg optimistic, and the speedo about 2-3 mph fast on my wheels/tyres.
Which I think is not too bad. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

The minefield of buying wood. 60’s child here. I measure and build in metric, calculate timber needs in board feet from a cutting list and pay for it in cubic metres when buying unprepped! And for sheet materials, saying 8x4 is much quicker than saying 2.4x1.2 until you get a person on the phone who doesn’t speak imperial.

Trying to work out MPG on a US car is interesting, as the us gallon is smaller than the UK gallon, had to add about 20% to my MPG reported in the DIC (no, not “ooh missus”, it is the “driver information centre”) on my American car. Litres per 100km is still witchcraft to me though, which the car did when I pressed the button to convert all the dials to metric when driving abroad!

And what the hell is the size of the “cup” Americans use when cooking? Is it the posh one with a saucer we give to guests when they visit, or is it the pail I take to the workshop?

Back on topic, mine is reading under 30 from the previous owner with an average speed of 35mph. I guess I had better work out how to reset it to get my figures.

Fill up the tank then write down the data (I write on the back of the receipt), then reset the trip meter. You really need to reset if every tank-full as the data will get less & less meaningful. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I’ve managed to bet the last figures
The car says 49.9mpg over 258 miles
On calculated mpg on fill up to fill up its 46.6mpg.
Avg speed of 49.2mph.
Southampton to Coventry and back.
