And occasionally I have been known to use a pencil with a nail indent made on it to transfer a measurement......

There use to be a shop near me who sold timber in imperial lengths and the section with one dimension imperial and the other metric. It got a bit confusing asking for a bit of wood in feet, toes and inches long and Xmm x Y" . Unsurprisingly the shop went out of business. Does anyone know if a person is as thick as two short planks what the dimension of the plank is in either system? During a dicussion at college comparing imperial with metric one student thought it impressive to describe his manhood as 6 inches, while another thought that 150 millimetres sounded even more impressive, but one female student said she preferred the equestrian system - she measured it in hands! It is possible to change the display to show metric readings, well I can on mine anyway! I always do when in Europe. MY 2013 SD GS Auto |

Well done Mattmjones you got the post back on track. Common sense isn't very common.

Was this wind assisted by yesterday's westerly gale, if so what was the average on the way back? I have a hard job to exceed 40mpg in any condition, except downhill. Couldn't tell you, sorry, as that leg was part of a longer run over a couple of days (Southampton to Bristol, then to Barmouth and back, then Bristol to London).

(Should add that these figures are only going on what the dash display says, so can't comment on accuracy in real terms!) |

By doing tank to tank fill-ups, and comparing with GPS readings, I think that mpg readout is about 2mpg optimistic, and the speedo about 2-3 mph fast on my wheels/tyres.

The minefield of buying wood. 60’s child here. I measure and build in metric, calculate timber needs in board feet from a cutting list and pay for it in cubic metres when buying unprepped! And for sheet materials, saying 8x4 is much quicker than saying 2.4x1.2 until you get a person on the phone who doesn’t speak imperial. Trying to work out MPG on a US car is interesting, as the us gallon is smaller than the UK gallon, had to add about 20% to my MPG reported in the DIC (no, not “ooh missus”, it is the “driver information centre”) on my American car. Litres per 100km is still witchcraft to me though, which the car did when I pressed the button to convert all the dials to metric when driving abroad! And what the hell is the size of the “cup” Americans use when cooking? Is it the posh one with a saucer we give to guests when they visit, or is it the pail I take to the workshop? Back on topic, mine is reading under 30 from the previous owner with an average speed of 35mph. I guess I had better work out how to reset it to get my figures. |

Fill up the tank then write down the data (I write on the back of the receipt), then reset the trip meter. You really need to reset if every tank-full as the data will get less & less meaningful. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
