United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Fuji White

I read the Autocar article and I found it contained no useful information. In fact it contained very little information at all, except that it comes with coil springs as standard, and the suspension and transmission components have been beefed up compared with the FFRR and RRS.

Hints were given that it uses an extra low gear in it's 8 speed auto instead of a low speed transfer box, and it's electronic Terrain Response has a separate set ups for both All Terrain and Mud Terrain tyres.

LR haven't revealed the car yet, journalists were only given a ride in the Defender, everything is still covered up.

Reading all articles from different magazines put some of my concerns to bed, such as interior space, there's plenty of it.

LRO claim it has low range and 3 auto locking diffs. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Today my local dealer sent me an invitation to book a 'Build Slot' for a New Defender, offering me an exclusive preview if I do.

Sadly I will have to give it a miss due to lack of funds, although of course I would have liked a look.

Email is headed

November I’m going to the dealer in Dundee to view it.

If I like what I see I’ll have one. A car like my Disco 4 appeals to me. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

It may well be a very nice compromise between D4 and Defender......and still have the older DNA from LR...in spirit at least, if so (and when the discount is available Wink ) it might be a nice replacement for the FL2. Regards

Here’s hoping that that’s Autocar making stuff up! A Defender without a low range ‘box would be unthinkable! Shocked

I see no reason for a low ratio box with an 8 speed or more box, after all the Series LR's gained their reputation on basically an 8 speed box, with todays electronics the cost reduction in choosing a multi speed box with calculated ratios is considerably cheaper and should be more reliable, the repair cost should also be cheaper my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I’ve owned the 5 speed manual and the 6 speed auto (and no low range) on my FL2’s and two D4’s and a Fatty with an 8 speed and high and low range and have used them all off road.

The narrowly spaced ratios of the 8 speed make for very smooth progress and seamless gear changes, from its reasonably low bottom gear to its deep overdrive top gear. In low range, you get the same close gears, with seamless changes, but from an ultra slow starting point, all the way up to a realistic top speed of around 55 mph. It also provides a nice low reverse gear. With the TFT speedo display, it even provides a speedo that only reads up to 60 mph, in very clear, 1 mph, increments.

Remove the low range and those gears are going to need to get spaced out, introducing larger gaps on road and effectively giving the car one, maybe two, useful off road gears with an annoying gap between them, along with an overly tall reverse gear.

Okay, many people who’ll buy this car will have no need of any off road capability but, for people who need “Land Rover’s most capable off roader ever”, it’ll be a laughing stock without low range and it’ll hurt the smoothness, economy and emissions on road if there are large gaps in the gearing to make up for it.

The old Series May have, effectively, had “only” 8 forward gears, but no one a LR will be taking the old Series as a developmental yard stick for driving sophistication! Wink

I suspect Autocar are just making it up.

The reverse could be driven from either of the two lower gears, perhaps only the Royal chauffeurs need the higher reverse for emergencies, but I'm sure JLR will accommodate them. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
