diff oil change

Bit of off the cuff levels check IRD looked OK and clean but on inspection of DIFF, it needed topping up and looked black so decided on an oil change. £18 spent (oil and suction gun) and 1 hours labour all complete. Glad i did now

Its amazing what you find. Did mine a couple of months ago, haven't done the haldex yet, done all the others though. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Did you find any metal particles suspended in the old oil? (you might have to pour most of the oil away before they are visible as they tend to sit on the bottom).

Jonesy,

That looks dirty as.

What mileage was it at when changed, and had it been done before that you knew about?

Back in the 70's and 80's I changed diff and gearbox oils on things like Morris Marina, Ford Escort etc and the oil was always clean despite the mileage. So what's going on here to get the oil in this state ? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE

what can turn diff oil black, was to level and only 75k miles
no noises or rumbles and no metal in old oil so i'm puzzled, even if never been changed surely shouldn't be like old engine oil
might add it to my yearly service ha ha Laughing
Just a thought, there was a fine paste on the magnet so i bet oil has never been changed and was black due to fine sediment
