decided to go shooting this morning with the kids, so packed up the car, with 3 air rifles, two air tanks and my shotgun carts and headed off to park lodge shooting ground.

The carpark was heaving, I've never seen so many cars in it, decided to leave kids in the car, head down to the air rifle range and check it out, that was full. Decided to call it a day and not shoot, as they were having a regional completion

Thats when i realised I hadn't taken my shotgun out of the safe and with me

So a quick look in the Gun Room and they had a nice 28g Shotgun I had seen online and now i have a lovely looking wood, Turkish Friend 'Yildiz' in Junior Stock for the kids in the cabinets

Maybe back tomorrow to give it a go

16gm , should be a nice gentle introduction for your children. Once in a while just for a laugh we take a Hushpower silenced . 410 to Kelbrook Lodge. It's quite a feat to break one of the more reasonable 40' driven clays with just a puny little pop . First outing didn't go as planned, the recoil hurt his shoulder and that was that

The purchase of a recoil pad and fitting it has made him less susceptible so had a nice morning

Great advice from the chap down at Recoil Systems about pad suitability and purchased a ISIS Pad from him

Hi NP, if you don't mind me saying ( I'm sure you will tell me if you do ), from that one picture I'd say the stock is too long for him, and that would be a cause for feeling recoil. His cheek is miles above the comb, and his head is canted over to the right. Recoil of course is subjective , but considering the above two points are probably causing him to lean slightly backwards then the butt will be in the shoulder muscle/ bicep not the shoulder pocket. Pop that lot together and you will have a less than ideal situation. With his cheek on the stock and a weight neutral or front foot stance , and gun mounted tight to the shoulder, the perceived recoil will be less. For around the price of 500 cartridges you could probably get the gun fitted for him, correct drop at comb and correct cast set. Of course for the length issue the " pull" distance would be reduced to suit his stature and could incorporate a sorbothane pad which could have spacers added as he grew a little.

Obviously I'm basing it on one picture , and on my lifelong belief that an hours gunfitting is worth a month of practice

Ps apologies if you know this but for length , if he picks up the gun and puts the butt pad on the inside of his elbow joint, with the stock running up his forearm , he should be able to comfortably hold the grip and his finger pad touch the trigger. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Martyn, they were my first thoughts too! the recoil will be felt more, as his head is too high etc., as described by yourself!

Maybe an hours tuition with the shooting grounds professional would help get his stance right, which in turn would hopefully help him enjoy his shooting in the future ?

the photo was a quick snapshot, not sure if it was in his shoulder at the time of clicking either

he does have a tendency to lean backward when he first stands there, a natural standing when your holding a 'heavy' gun out front of you, but when i am next to him, i get him front foot forward and holding the weight on it or spread over both, butt in the pocket etc

still going to see how he goes, before fitting the gun to him as i think he needs to build confidence first, at the moment he can't brake barrels or snap it shut Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I'm going to book him an intro session soon....... and go from there...

Ten years ago I paid for my lad to have lessons at Kelbrook Shooting School when he was 13 . It was a great investment because he was taught the basics in a very nice setting, and was not under any pressure from me. At that age We put him straight onto a 12 bore with 21 gm training cartridges. The weight of the gun , and the light recoil down the bigger bore , made it a very confortable experience for him.
