So where is the LP fuel pump?

My 2007 TD4 broke down again yesterday. The nice man from Green Flag gave me and my car a lift all the way back to Essex from Somerset.
I posted a while ago that the car broke down near where I live, Green Flag came, it started and he suggested it was a dirty fuel filter. Changed that and added the extra earth cable.
Been fine for a month or so then yesterday I pulled away got hundred yards up the road and the car just died.
The first Green Flag guy came, plugged in his fault code reader but no faults showed up. He came to the conclusion it's the low pressure fuel pump.
After doing loads of reasarch today ( a lot on this site) I also believe it is the fuel pump.
But, where is it?
I rang a local mechanic for a quote, he said it's located under the RH wheel arch. Also on line this seemed to be favourite. I removed the RH wheel arch but no sign of a pump.
So would it be located in the tank?
Any advice would be warmly appreciated as I have started to remove bits of the car to drop the tank out. It's a turning in to a major job. I don't want to go any further if it's not neccasary.
PS how do I get 30 litres of fuel out of the tank?

I think your mechanic is talking about the original Freelander - that has a pump. I think our models don't have a low pressure pump, I think fuel is drawn up from the tank by the high pressure pump, not pumped up. I might be wrong though!

Isn't that just to pump fuel from one side if the saddle tank to the other?

I might be wrong too! I was looking at this, was not sure if it was the one in question:

The pump in the tank is called a fuel module/sender unit,
As mentioned it moves fuel around tank and is used if you had a fuel fired heater fitted(PTC)
The fuel pump is located on engine driven by exhaust cam.
You need to check for any codes to give you a better idea of what's going on.

Joe Fix it until it's broke !

Well thanks for the input. But I still am at a loss as to what to do.
I thought the pump on the engine is the high pressure fuel pump?
This is fed from the low pressure full pump located in or near the tank?
No fault codes were shown.

I have read on here about the exhaust cam snapping at the end that drives the fuel pump but I think it was mainly limited to Russian vehicles. I'm just thinking that if no fault codes are showing up, your problem may be mechanical or even a fuel blockage or air leak.

As I've said in another thread, there are 3 pumps.
- the one in the tank, electrical, for equalizing the two sides of the saddle type fuel tank.
- the lift pump or low pressure fuel pump, on the same body with the high pressure fuel pump, mechanical, used to "suck" fuel from the tank and deliver it to the HP pump
- the high pressure fuel pump, mechanical, which generates the high pressure for the fuel rail.

Thanks for clearing up the fuel pump locations.
I have also seen a post by super spark and the very detailed PDf he up loaded.
After reading through that post that started in 2012, I know think my issue is the sender unit/ pump.
When I broke down the fuel gauge was reading empty even though I had over half a tank of fuel. This was also the case last time it broke down.
So would I be correct in thinking that if the car thinks it has run out of fuel it will stop?

Thanks Alex.
Prop shaft removed this evening.
Now what to do with the 30+ liters of fuel in the tank?

The new in tank fuel pump and sender unit turned up today. Very quick service from Rimmer Bros, only ordered it at 11.30 am yesterday.
I got most of the fuel out the tank using a halfords tyre inflater connected to the return pipe disconnected from the fuel filter, which then pressurised the tank and pushed the fuel out of the feed pipe that I connected to a hose and in to a 25ltr container.
Worked really well.
Waiting until Saturday now to drop the tank out. It's wet and horrible out tonight!

Well I fitted a new in tank pump and sender unit today. If I had a car lift it would be such a simple task!
The car started fine but did stop after a few revs, then wouldn't start again. I had bled all the air from the fuel system and could see fuel in the tubes.
Tried a few more times, plugged in my code reader but no faults shown.
Sounded like the battery was struggling after a few attempts so put the battery charger on.
Tried agin and it fired up straight away.
I think it's the original battery, so would a dodgy battery cause a non start even tho it's turning the engine over OK?
