M25 breakdown, no start then all OK?

Guys, wondered if anyone had a similar experience and could help.
On Saturday night at 11.30 my freelander 2 lost power and flashed up the 'reduced power' warning on the dash, fortunately I was just at Cobham services slip so I was able to get off the motorway. Within 50 yards in died completely and would not restart. The RAC recovered me home complete with car trailer and rally car! We did try putting in 3 gallons of fuel first.
For 4 days it would not start, until I arranged for a recovery company to take it to my local mechanic, it fired up straight away and he drove it onto the truck!
My mechanic could not fined anything except some old stored codes and currently it is running fine, but I have lost faith in it as it could leave me high and dry again!
Whilst on my drive I did try priming the fuel filter using a devise for sucking up oil, but this made no difference.
The only other event which could be tied in is that I recently had the fuel gauge sender replaced as the gauge was showing the usual erratic behaviour, but is currently working OK.
Any ideas?

Did you happen to notice what the range to empty was when it was not starting? If that was a positive number it would probably rule out a problem with the new tank sender.

Something like this can be very hard to track down unless the garage have it in a non-starting condition. My wife's car (not a LR) had a couple of non-start episodes last year, but would always re-start after a day or so. The garage had it for a week trying to replicate the fault, but when there it always started first time and they could find nothing wrong. Then, after a year and about 3 non-start episodes, it was in for a routine service when it finally failed to start in the workshop. Turned out to be the MAF sensor not getting power - the relay serving it was replaced and it's been fine since.

That's a long-winded way of saying that intermittent faults with no stored codes can be a nightmare to identify on modern vehicles with all their complex electronics.

Thanks pab, unfortunately I did not see the range when it stopped but the fuel warning light was not on, also after it stopped the I checked the fuel gauge which was just under half and the range said around 150mls.
we put in 3 gallons at the services which took it over half full.

I have had 3 FL2's which came up with "reduced power", in all cases the fuel filter was changed shortly after and no recurrence. I know this isn't proof of anything but I think these cars are very sensitive to fuel filter problems.

For what it's worth a LR Assist guy told me that they went through a spate of problems like this last year and it was especially noticeable the further north you got towards the winter. Implying that if you had summer diesel in and had a sudden cold snap in the autumn than there could be an element of waxing up in the filter. Of course no way of proving this. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Hi Graham

FWIW I have had a few Reduced Engine Performance errors where DTCs point to low fuel pressure. The problem was that my very basic OBDII reader found absolutely nothing, so I bought an iCarSoft unit for Jaguar/LR and lots of codes were stored. My advice is to check what your mechanic is using to read the codes. False negatives are unhelpful.

As far as fuel filter problems are concerned, all my REPs have happened shortly after filling the tank. Sometimes this has been within 30 minutes and sometimes the next day. A restart has always cleared the fault. So I bought a new fuel filter and the problem has gone away, even though I haven't actually got around to fitting it yet! Which makes me ever more curious as to how a filter can be so badly clogged that it causes low fuel rail pressure and yet the engine will run fine under heavy load (eg a 1:5 hill) for days, even when cold. I'm thinking it's probably crud in the bottom of the tank. Cutting the old one open might shed some light on this annoying problem. I will update as soon I get it changed.

Thanks for everyone's responses, I have been using it for nearly a week and had no repeat of REP or stopping completely. It starts fine, waiting with figures crossed it will not happen again.
I will change the filter very soon!

Hi Graham, I had a similar problem 4 months ago. (Sudden engine cut out and 'reduced power' flashed up). After a minute or so I was able to restart as normal only for it to happen again in a few miles Again, it restarted a while later. I managed to get to my local garage who determined that the cause was a failure of the crank angle position sensor. Changing it solved the problem. Just a thought.
