I used one of the bolts behind the glove box as an earth stud, as for the piggy back fuse, the first one I had I made myself and thus it needed to be the correct way round, I imagine this is still the case with the bought piggy back fuses.
I am sure there is a picture on here somewhere.
I'll keep an eye out on my travels, I'm only over the hill from Bolton and travel through there often Thumbs Up

Cheers for the image, and for the offer of help. The guide seems pretty easy to follow so hopefully i will be ok plus the mrs drives the car day to day as its kind of the family car so the sat nav is for her and it means late night xmas eve is when i will have to fit it once she has gone bed lol. No pressure on me then to get it right haha. So might not be the kind of time to ask for assistance lol.

A bit off topic but seen as you are from around here other than the track up rivington are there any good places around the area to go for a drive that you know of.

United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Zermatt Silver

Hi everyone,

I will be collecting my new freelander 2 2008 (well new to me) on sunday and one for the first jobs i will be doing is fitting this.
I have no real worries about fiting the tomtom its self. My only worry is the wireing. I understand about the earth and bolting that on no problem.
My problem is the other wires. Can anyone explain to me in simple terms. How you do this, right so i have the cable plugged into the back of the tomtom then the other end with the USB plug goes to the fuse box? Do i strip this cable back to wire the cables direct to the fuse box?
I have ordered a piggy back fuse as talked about on here, im just unsure how to connect it to the usb.
I hope this makes sence and im not sounding to stupid.
Thanks for any help

Hi you need a cigarette lighter socket , most motor factor stores , inc Halfords have them, into which you plug the USB adapter that comes with TT . Do not cut your USB cable Connect live wire from cigarette socket to your piggy back fuse and ground wire to car body.If you mount cigarette socket in glove compartment you can easily disconnect USB and connect to laptop for updates.

This type of socket is wired into the fuse box, actually it's not wired but use one of the piggy back type fuses detailed earlier in the thread, this makes it a plug in affair without touching or breaking any wires.

This device plugs into the above to provide a use power source, the socket above is at 12v and this drops it down to 5v.

It's a very good mod and relatively easy and straightforward, lots of hints in the thread, let us know how you get on. Thumbs Up

Not wishing to muddy the water, but I think the Garmin nuvi 2797 is also worth a look - it has a 7" screen that is an exact fit in the cubby hole. The wiring, I think, would be the same as for the TomTom.

Just to say that I don't think the TomTom is picking up the best possible signal in this position. I found that it was important to plug it into the laptop every so often and update the software (there is a program that locates the satellites and this gets updated. Forget the name but it's mentioned above somewhere). Easy to do this if you have the unit plugged in in the glove compartment as described above - just unplug from socket and plug in to laptop. I also found that very occasionally the internal battery would discharge. This means you have to press the "on" switch on the back of the unit to get it to start up. Only happened to me a couple of times.
Now have a newer car with LR satnav fitted. Not as good and also expensive to update I fear. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.
