Oil filter worry

Changed the oil and filter today. Used the 27mm flexible ratchet as recommended on this forum. Worked a treat. So what's the worry? Well, upon removing the housing the filter just fell out. I popped the new one in and screwed the housing back in place. Over a well earned coffee I was checking the forum and found out that the filter should click in place. Oops! So, I'm wondering if when screwing the housing back it might click the filter into place or is just floating around and the real question does this matter?

Simon

The filter should click into the housing/cap.
If you don't have any problems with the oil pressure warning lamp, then don't worry, all is OK.

mine was the opposite, it took me ages to free the filter from the canister, and I was wondering if it had ever been changed !!

When I changed the filter on my Golf diesel (which is the same type as the FL) the top came off without the filter element 'clicked' in place and remained in the housing so I just lifted it out. On closer inspection, the main dealer technician (read probable first year apprentice Evil or Very Mad ) that carried out that service for the previous owner had broken one of the 8 or so plastic tangs that forms the 'clicky' part of the assembly and it was laying flat on the housing cover as it had been trapped between the filter element and the underside of the cover. If that small piece of plastic had managed to find its way into the oilway......well, you know what could have happened. Just be sure you haven't done that to yours. Sleep well! Whistle

it should seat with a click to locate correctly
if its top mounted just unscrew and ensure its seated properly and sort it for peace of mind. mines the 3.2 petrol which is top sideup, but unsure if the diesel is upside down so obviously you couldn't unscrew without losing oil - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement

If my wife ever sells my stuff for what I told her I paid for it, there will be some bargains out there!
