Q: where is the VIN stamped onto the chassis?

Reason I ask was that this morning I took her Ladyship's FL2 for its Swiss version of the MOT for the first time. Okay you can see the VIN on the label at the base of the "B" pillar and in the bottom right corner of the windscreen - but - where is it stamped on the chassis?

The inspector/tester (local garages are not allowed to do these official tests, only your Kantone's own test centres do them) said that in his computer it states that it is stamped under the right rear seat. To he looked and could not see it. Then he looked under the left rear seat could not see it. So where is it chaps

As he failed to find it he failed her FL2, a vehicle which was bought by me new here in Switzerland from an official LR Dealer who had it supplied by the official LR Swiss importer who had it built by JLR in Hailwood.

Then he got "shirty" and failed the official LR Alloys because the serial numbers on theses 18" Evoque alloys that I fitted for her summer tyres were again not in his computer. Then he got really annoying and failed both fog lights. Not because they didn't work, but because the left was 3mm too high and the right 2mm too low. To say I was p*ss*d off with the Fascist git would be an understatement.

No fault found with any of the absolutely essential safety components just serial numbers not in his computer. So a retest is demanded and yet another fee to pay. And I have to get these serial numbers into his official computer system by telling my LR dealer to tell the official LR Swiss Importer to update their input to the Swiss Governments Vehicle technical data systems. I'm sure that is not going to be an easy task - especially as I will only have 2 or 3 weeks before the retest date. If it fails again they take the vehicle registration docs away from you and impound the FL2.

Final note: he did not test the horn or the main beam - just did not like Johnny Foreigner - typical.

Right that's one smirk to be knocked off the examiner's face on the retest. His computer directions need to be amended in accordance with you excellent directions.

They are - they do not differentiate between types of Johnny Foreigner

Indeed they hate all foreigners even more than they hate the other Swiss who come from a different village/speak a different language (and they do hatte them too!). And maybe so would we if we had to live on barren mountains with not much sun and no-one but cows and the occasional goat (see Heidi) for company!
Actually I've always found the Swiss extremely friendly, although there is a tendency to rip you off when buying diesel on the motorway. I even have a Swiss friend with a sense of humour! But I've not been near the strange shadowy bits where it gets REALLY mountainous, snow all the year round, only speak Romansch etc! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Generally the Swiss do make foreign visitors very welcome as they feed into the nation's singular religion of praying to the God of Geld (money) into which every Swiss child is baptised before they can even walk.

Foreign residents are treated differently with deference grudgingly acquiesced on a linear scale commensurate with the fiscal contribution made to local and national taxes/fees. Net result: if you can fail Johnny Foreigner's vehicle on the MOT for any spurious reason (couldn't find the VIN chassis stamp) then do so and you'll earn twice the fee.

Tip: when motoring in Switzerland buy your fuel from the two major Swiss supermarkets' own fuel stations (not always attached to the actual food stores) Coop Pronto stations and Migros Oil.

All I know about the Swiss is that they don't like filtering motorcyclists! Last year they did their damnest to block us when we were filtering through heavy traffic. Oh, and my mate went into a hotel that we found on our Tom tom app, tried to book a room for the night and then found out it was an actual brothel. Filtering on a motorcycle is illegal - luckily you weren't noticed by the plod - first offence is CHF60 (GBP£40)
Having said that I see many local and foreign plate bikers (and I do) filter along in traffic jams

Crazy how serial numbers on wheel fails the MOT over there.

Do you have to have both sets registered to the FL2, winter and summer etc

Can't see LR Doing all that paperwork for free either

Both sets (18 & 17) are registered to her FL2 - both are LR Alloys.

Fortunately my new (16mths) latest official LR dealer is based in Liechtenstein and has responded superbly.

Amongst underwriting the retest and providing documentary proof that the examiner acted incorrectly, the will also supply a set of 18" wheels for the purpose of the retest. The 130km round trip to the FL dealership is worth every one of those kilometres and will be the automatic choice for the purchase of her Ladyship's next Land Rover - if she behaves herself
