I've got a BlackVue 500 and find the lens to be too short giving a very wide angle view that takes in the A pillars. This along with focussing that is too close makes most registration plates unreadable. The 400's lens is a little longer giving a better picture.

Optimising...

...

What's the opinion / experience of forum members regarding dash cams? Specifically where to have them pointing? Forwards? Backwards? Sideways? in order to maximise their benefit - ie proving, in the event of a collision, what actually happened and, if you're blameless, proving the other dingbat was at fault?

It's unrealistic to have 360deg cameras in place, so where does it work best to protect you from typical / likely / dangerous behaviour on t'road?

... Ta! ...

Definitely facing forwards and pointing down very slightly. Make sure your camera has your bonnet in view.
If you are hit from behind, then it'll still prove that you have stopped/slowed down.

Also, i try and reverse in when parked up so it would show the car if I got hit.

It comes with a safeguard to stop it completely draining the battery.

What's the safeguard? Is that only when the Smart Power option is added to the set up? * GONE. GS TD4 Manual MY2013. Orkney Grey with privacy, cold and clearview packs, armrests (a must!) and a spoiler.

Anyone here using a Road Hawk?

I have these installed in both mine and Mrs Jim's cars, but the other day I decided to review the cards in both and found that other cars number plates are unreadable.

I have the video quality of both cameras set to High, but the index numbers of other cars are just unreadable blurs.

Anyone else having problems or is there an update or setting that I need?

I took delivery of a new Freelander HSE SDi last month and had a Blackvue 550 front and rear camera system fitted. I also had the battery saver unit fitted so as to conserve power whilst the vehicle is parked in the garage for long periods. The front cam is mounted behind the rear view mirror and does not obstruct and vision and is unobstructed to switch the WiFi and other controls. The rear camera is fitted aprox 20mm down from the top of the rear window and is within the wiper area and clear of any heated window wires. The cable has been routed through the same route as all the other cables leading from the tailgate. The output is HD quality and although they are not cheap (£300 for both camera units) the results are excellent. You can view the capture videos on a smart phone or tablet using WiFi without removing the SD card. I had a 32gig card fitted as the two cameras recording use a bit more space.

I wondered how you were getting on with the Blackvue DR550GW, now that you've had it a while? Also, do you have any photos of it in situ?

Haven't read all 12 pages and apologies if the link has been posted, but here's the topic from the disco3 site, the footage from the youtube clips from blowpipe and the link to it from character for it on amazon makes it look like a good buy, might even get rid of mine and swmbos black views

That seems to be a link to a thread about led lights?

Just bought a Blackvue DR500GW-HD with the Smart Power device. Camera is installed and working fine with the phone connection. However, I need some advice on what to do with the Smart Power.

It is labelled "Low Battery Detector" by Skybatt, model SB-0A (zero amps?). I have a red and black lead to the cigar plug plus three other leads;

    black - battery(-)
    yellow - baterry(+)
    white - acc

Black is earth so which of the other two is switched/unswitched supply? Also, which are suitable fuse locations for these supplies in the footwell fuse box on a MY13?

I have searched this and other forums to no avail. GONE - '07 TD4 GS manual Zermatt Silver

Yellow is perm live - fuse 5
White is switched - can't remember the fuse offhand.

Just checked mine.

I used fuse 28 for switched live. It's for heated headlamp wash I think - something I don't have on my GS
