Now realy this is sad. The reason is mainly that as up to 20 years ago all the land was state owned and there wasno interest to invest (by the state ) in caravan sites (considered a capitalist luxury). Anyway there was no car to tow a caravan as the Romanian made Renaults only had about 45 HP - and not all of them alive.

Just read that the U.K. has recently started importing Dacias again. why? have you got an oversupply of them over there? At work

John;

Sorry for not replying, just been away. The mirrors thing is suddenly quite an issue! I bought a pair from Riversway Leisure last year which seemed just the ticket (and I can get them to fit my F2). However, a recent article in the Caravan Club magazine stated that unless they were 'E' marked you were liable to a fine and points on your license. Apparently Milenco are the only company to guarantee that their mirrors meet this legislation. I'm going back to Riversway to ask them about mine before I go to Scotland next month.

Yes its strange how this mirror issue has suddenly become so topical. I thought the Caravan Club article was slightly helpful, but to be honest it was more like a free one page advertisement for Millenco. How come they are the only supplier of 'E' marked mirrors? To be honest I'm going treat this issue with a pinch of salt for now, I tow with two decent securely attached correctly adjusted towing mirrors, which is more than some do. If it gets to the stage where they set up road side checks to see if the towing mirrors are 'E' marked then I'll have a problem. In the mean time I think road safety enforcement authorities has bigger problems to deal with. Sounds like someone has dropped the ball keeping up with legislation, I look forward to the CC giving us a better explanation soon.

Spoke too soon.....
Just found an update on CC website, this is the conclusion ....

Conclusions
Currently, there is no need for consumers to purchase new mirrors,
although they are free to do so. From 26 January 2010 there will also be
no need for consumers to purchase new mirrors unless and until they
purchase a new vehicle. Anyone currently looking to buy new mirrors
might consider it prudent to select those which are compliant with the
post-January 2010 requirements, since such mirrors will satisfy the most
recent safety requirements, and will remain usable with any car bought in
the foreseeable future.

Er, CG - there was a queue of about 6 vehicles behind me coming out of Keswick towards Penrith on the way home but there were dozens in front of me behind a coach struggling uphill at less than 40mph. Not all queues are due to us!

Avtur - I was also a bit sceptical about the mirror issue and used my existing ones which are perfectly adequate. I see plenty of people towing (not just caravans) without mirrors so I feel quite happy that my outfit is fine, especially as I am meticulous about noseweight and proper loading etc.

As for my F2, what a vehicle! It towed magnificently and is just a pure joy to drive. The guy on the next pitch had a big 08 plate Honda 4x4 but it was my F2 that took the eye of most people! I just hope that it proves to be as reliable as the Japanese cars are.

Guess that most companies are outsourcing parts manufacturing and they do not want the parts to have a too long life span as they get more by replacing the patrs than by lesser warranty costs.
Years ago Rolls Royce had a 25 world wide warranty and the only thing they got was theywere sold out. FREELANDER 2 TD4 SE (XS UK) IZMIR BLUE SIDE STEPS COLD PACK BI-XENON TINTED WINDOWS - AND PROUD OF HER

Claiming on the clutch is sort of tricky as the first thing they will say is "you held the foot on the clutch to much". Finally if you argue long enough and the problem did not arrise just before warranty was finished there are good chances that you might win. At least this is what they do over here. My brother had this problem with his VW and it took a lot of shouthing to have it sorted out.
If this happens whithin 3000 miles I guess there should be no problem Thumbs Up FREELANDER 2 TD4 SE (XS UK) IZMIR BLUE SIDE STEPS COLD PACK BI-XENON TINTED WINDOWS - AND PROUD OF HER

It keeps my dad quiet he was going on about Japanese reliability when he bought it. He is very demanding though, the polos air-con need re-gassing after 3 years and he thought that was outrageous.(nothing else broke on the car)

What weight caravan do people tow with their FL2s?

I haven't bought one yet but it is something that we've been discussing doing for a few years. Getting some quality weekends away with the kids before they get to old.

I do find it disappointing to see the negative sentiment towards caravaners on this site. To my mind whether you choose to tow a caravan, speedboat, jet ski or whatever. We should be celebrating the versatility and capability of the car that allows us to do all of these things. It is a LAND ROVER after all. How many different uses have they been put to over the last 60 years?

Hi Pete

I tow a Sterling Europa 540 '07 which is about 1500kg, without a problem, though mpg does drop to 23-25mpg when its fully loaded.

If you require any advice on the purchase of a new caravan i am quite sure many on here will be able to help you out.

I know it appears that there is a little caravan hatred but its light hearted banter (i hope) Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis
