Rev,
In the UK handbook the max towing limit on road is 2000kg. (4400lbs), In the North American Market handbook it states 1585kg (3500lbs).
The Caravan Club in the UK advise not to tow a caravan more than 85% of the weight of a car. I think a similar compulsory ruling must apply over there hence lowering your towing limit. Younger drivers in the UK must not exceed the 85% rule.
There are people on this website who tow similar weights and haven't mentioned any problems. However most of us have diesels (TD4)

I telephoned Land Rover technical department today to and asked them why there is a difference in the US and UK towing limits.
They told me it was American Legislation relating to the "Tow Receptors". Eventually I found out what he meant by the tow receptors is the towing bracket.

Great info! Thanks very much. Any idea why the UK and NA specs are different?

Wow! You are resourcefull! Thanks very much. Coming soon: LR2 HSE; Alaska White; Nav; Premium Sound; Bluetooth; Lighting Package

So you are ignoring the 85% rule. Unstable outfit. Accident waiting to happen and you complain about caravanners.
We are all waiting of news about the baby. We will know when it arrives as you will not be on here. Good luck and keep us informed.

No problems with the law the tractor is easily big enough for the trailer, and with hydraulic brakes all round stopping is a breeze. Although to legally travel at over 20mph I would need HGV style air brakes which are fitted to many tractors if they do a lot of road work.

not sure about this though Shocked ?

I will keep you informed about Mrs G and the future arrival, not long now and I will be too tired to come on here and stir up you vaners. Laughing At work

I think that the UK and NA are different as the 2000 Kg reffer to Diesel and the 1585 Kg for petrol. I understood that only the petrol is available in North America FREELANDER 2 TD4 SE (XS UK) IZMIR BLUE SIDE STEPS COLD PACK BI-XENON TINTED WINDOWS - AND PROUD OF HER

That is true. I would have bought a diesel had it been available here. I assume it would be more fuel efficient. Coming soon: LR2 HSE; Alaska White; Nav; Premium Sound; Bluetooth; Lighting Package

I have just bought a TD4 SE Auto specifically for holidays towing our 'van and also long trips to snowy (?) Scotland in winter. The auto box gives you the choice of auto or using the Commandshift which is basically a manual selection of gears without a clutch pedal. Haven't hooked up yet - slight problem with electrics on the tow bar which needs sorting - but solo the F2 is absolutely superb. Just turned 4,000 miles on the clock and getting between 27-29.8 mpg around town and on my trip up from London 36.4mpg (includes heavy traffic conditions on M40) at a steady 70-75mph. I hope to better that as the engine 'loosens'.

Went for the ex-managers SE because I get nearly all the 'toys' I want (the only thing I miss is an armrest strangely enough!) at a reasonable price.

I am about to tow a caravan with my HSE auto but have found my towing mirrors won't fit. What type

Dont say I never help the vaners .."quote tandemman...milenco aero are currently the only CE marked mirrors and to use non CE marked mirrors on a 2006/7 8 car could result in a very heavy fine and invalidated insurance"

Well if they insist on towing it is better if they can see us poor souls stuck behind them.

I see your from Bradford on Avon John, I holidayed in Freshford a few years ago, very nice. I stayed in a real house though, not a portable one Laughing We did lots of walking along the canals etc and had a good walk around Bradford. Ever been to the New inn at Westwood? At work

Now realy this is sad. The reason is mainly that as up to 20 years ago all the land was state owned and there wasno interest to invest (by the state ) in caravan sites (considered a capitalist luxury). Anyway there was no car to tow a caravan as the Romanian made Renaults only had about 45 HP - and not all of them alive.
Now land can be sold/bought and some was given back to the rightfull owners but land prices have exploded so noone wants to invest in a sort of real low return scheeme. Therefore everyone invests in hotels, villas, aso and our seaside is more expensive than Greece. So normal people, as myself holiday abroad.
On the bright side - with our overcrowded full of potholes roads lack of caravans is sort of good.
Instead we get catrs driven by horses and ususlly drunk peasants who cause terrible accidents. They are not really allowed on national roads but ............
Actually I wish I had some mileco shares bought some years ago as nowdays they probably are not longer interesting. Allways miss the investment opportunities Banging Head FREELANDER 2 TD4 SE (XS UK) IZMIR BLUE SIDE STEPS COLD PACK BI-XENON TINTED WINDOWS - AND PROUD OF HER

John;

Sorry for not replying, just been away. The mirrors thing is suddenly quite an issue! I bought a pair from Riversway Leisure last year which seemed just the ticket (and I can get them to fit my F2). However, a recent article in the Caravan Club magazine stated that unless they were 'E' marked you were liable to a fine and points on your license. Apparently Milenco are the only company to guarantee that their mirrors meet this legislation. I'm going back to Riversway to ask them about mine before I go to Scotland next month.

Just been on our first caravan trip with my F2. We went to the Keswick, covering 256 miles in total of which 190 was towing, and returned 24.8mpg overall. The car drove perfectly using auto or commandshift and I am absolutely delighted with it!
I must just add this about James Tayler at Charles Hurst; I had a problem with the towbar electrics which I had fixed locally at no cost, and e-mailed James to let him know that it was fixed and we were OK apart from needing a number plate for the caravan (which I had completely forgotten about until checking the lights!). Quick as a flash he had one made up and it was with me the following afternoon - he said it was a gesture of goodwill for the inconvenience over the electrics. I call that excellent service/customer relations and this is to publicly thank him. Dealers take a lot of stick (a lot of it justified) so when they do something like that I think it only fair to pat them on the back. Thumbs Up
