Hi , think I am going to do this , to my newly acquired 07 freelander, looks simple enough, one question though, how bright is this at night , the sat nav in my jag dims when you turn the lights on , is there a night time option on the Tom Tom?

It doesn't integrate with the car but the option to switch manually to night/day mode is there or it can switch automatically based on its system time.

Yes you can change night/ day and there is also a brightness setting which is wide ranging.
There is the ability also to change the Map colours, I have downloaded the OS style colouring but there are many or you can develop your own.
There are also newer models out now with 'Live' services, traffic reports etc, might be worth looking at those if your do a lot of travelling?

This may be of interest to those folk who have large fingers and cannot get them in or out.
Whilst away on a rally in the caravan another lower spec FL2 without sat-nav was parked next to me and he had a mod which is so simple and makes the sat-nav easy to remove.

Cut a piece of Perspex to the same shape as the cubby hole in the dash, cover one side with the type of rubber mat that sticks like "sh-t" to a blanket.(The type with wrinkles and holes which is demo'ed by being placed on a tea tray complete with jug of milk and tilted to some ridiculous angle and jug does not slide off), place in cubby rubber side down and Tom Tom on window mount on other side positioned so it looks as if it is meant to be there.
Looked good to me.
Have also seen Tom Tom screen mount attached to the useless factory fitted sat-nav screen.

Hope this will help anybody who is not into major projects.

Hi Bill,
I think that sounds a great way round the problem. Though mine is fastened in it is still a pain to update even if you can pull the connector through as one of the other guys suggests. I will give it a go and EE what happens Ralph

United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Stornoway Grey

Hi Guys
Picture of my Installation using two bits of drain pipe bracket to lower the fixing point of the cable tie, also a couple of bits of plastic raw plug to stop the tie fouling with the on/ff switch. I have used the front cigar lighter for power as this is controlled by the ignition switch, this gives me a bit more lead when updating from my laptop and enables me to unplug(switch off) while driving.

Great guide in this post - thanks.

Does anybody know how long a fully charged battery will last when on Auto on shutdown as my little pink finger is having a job reaching the on-off switch?

Works great just a bit worried about battery lasting when I go away.

Not sure if I am missing something, you don't need to reach the button with your finger as there is a setting within the menu that turns on the unit when it receives external power, I have left mine for two weeks without any problem, starts up straight away?

Hi Taztastic
Sorry if I misled you, I only need the button on the back of the unit if it fails to power up and I need to do a hard reset.

It is switching off & on when I supply or disconnect power and reading some of the posts the battery only lasts for a short while.

You have answered my query that the battery lasts for at least 2 weeks if left on stand by, obviously assuming it is fully charged.

Many thanks Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto with Winter Pack, Stornaway Grey, Ebony, Grey Mirror Caps. Removable towbar with 13 pin Electrics
