The downside of fitting it permanently is that you have to dismantle the dash when something goes wrong. I've only had to do that a couple of times mind you.
Could be that the power supply lead they've fitted is a bit iffy.
Don't understand the comment about the laptop lead. I have mine wired to a power supply in the glovebox, which is a cigar-lighter socket with a USB adaptor. If I detach the (standard) power supply lead from the adaptor it is plenty long enough to pull out and attach to my laptop.

That's fine if you don't have the traffic system power lead attached. Like you I have mine hard wired but I have fitted a short fly lead between the micro input on the Start 60 and the trafficower lead. I can then pull the lead out through a small hole in the dash behind the rubber tray and then connect the normal mini to USB laptop lead. still a pain though particularly when it takes forever to update everything. I will try clearing the cache next time before I update hoping that this will speed things up. Ralph

Got back to garage today and sat with installer whilst he checked everything and he found that the TomTom car adapter wasn't
fully engaging into the cigarette lighter socket , soon sorted and can say all working fine now Thumbs Up

Harvey, it is quite straightforward, the hardest part for me was the centre speaker cover, it was very stiff, everything else from there was very straightforward.

Would you be able to explain to me the part about fitting the earth? all the rest seems easy enough to follow. Many thanks Kieran Whyte

Hi Kieran
Drop Martin a PM and change your username, you will be spammed to bits otherwise! Just drop the @ hotmail part.

To answer your question, behind the glove box under the dash you will find plenty of metalwork, I simply used one of the screws into this metalwork as an earth point, a ring terminal crimped onto to the wire and placed under a stud and voila, you have an earth point.
I keep looking at the latest 'live' TomTom units as they have much better traffic alerts, I fitted a TMC receiver to mine but its rubbish, for some weird reason it only ever picks up a signal on the M6 toll, this is even with a new FM roof aerial fitted to get a better signal.

Taz,

I noticed your previous post regarding the TMC poor performance. Mine has been fine, over most of the UK. it does struggle a bit in the county of Lincs, it must be all the flat land eating the signal. My installation is nothing special and the bulge just sits behind the dash.

Where did you source it, is it definitely a pukka TOMTOM and not a kirf? Never tell me the odds.

I have two, both look genuine neither of them work, eBay so say no more, I went and fitted a roof mounted shark fin aerial and spliced it into the aerial on the pod but still nothing.
Unless I drive down the M6 toll then all of a sudden it starts working, exactly the same spot but only southbound, doesn't work coming North, proves it works and must be a signal issue.
Given up on the idea now, I don't do anywhere near the mileage I was doing so not needed the same, might just remove the pods and fit the standard lead, it's recognising the TMC device but just sits there with a rotating waiting symbol, thought it may be the heated screen at first.

That is annoying. I really did have to think hard before I spent the money on Amazon to source it. It was not cheap compared to EBay, and I have risked Ebay on things before. As you say, it is probably not a necessary item for you these days, but I wanted you to know that the genuine article works ok. Never tell me the odds.

Hmm, may be a signal issue.
Does anyone know if the genuine LR roof antenna has FM or is it just a satellite antenna?

I know the radio antenna is built into the offside rear window but the roof mounted one may be an option.
