New brakes done!

So today was put aside for the brake replacement/upgrade.

This is the kit I bought, M-Tec cross drilled brakes with Mintex Pads.

But I decided I wanted genuine Land Rover Pads, but after a bit of research, I found that Land Rover use TRW pads. So I sourced TRW pads locally and got both sets for just £55 inc VAT.

So I have a full set of brand new Mintex pads if anyone is interested!

So off I went! Although not obvious, I have also replaced my side repeaters with new genuine clear units. My existing clear units were copies and had started to go a bit yellow.

Here is the first front brake complete. I decided to take off the calliper, clean it up and paint it silver just to tidy things up.

I always make a point of washing the inside of the wheels when ever they are taken off.

The Rear stripped. I also cleaned out the hand brake area by blowing out all the dust and top and tailing the shoes.

Partially built up, again the callipers were removed and painted before re-fitting. Of course the copper slip was used.

All done, hand brake adjusted.

Then out for a drive across country and main roads for about 15-20 miles. As I paid extra to have the silver protective coating on the discs, they recommended a good first drive to wear this off the disc face.

So what are my thoughts? Too early to say of course as they are not properly bedded in. But the quality of the discs is excellent, I think they look very good. Very glad I didn't go for grooved as this could look a bit boy racerish for this type of car.

But I did do one very hard brake after we had been out this evening and done about 50 miles and they do bite extremely well under hard braking. Much better than before. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

TRW pads

I am reasonably certain of my following thoughts - and im allowed to think arnt I?
.
I think you should be careful on thinking that by buying TRW pads that you are buying OEM Landrover spec parts as you are probably not.
TRW are a parts supply operation for OE and aftermarket.
.
I believe TRW source pads for LR in Germany. The aftermarket ones I bought in a TRW box are Chinese manufacture.
.
I bought genuine LR for the back, the friction material had printed data indentical to the factory fit.
As yet I haven't decided what to do with the Chinese fronts.
.

The Genuine Pads I bought for the Freelander were stamped Galfer, which I believe is owned by TRW, bought from the dealer, in a genuine LR box with the part number. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Think they look great.

Would love some feedback after you have driven around for a while. The FL2 is a big car and my initial feelings are that the brakes are not as #assertive' as my last car - a Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer.

I've done a bit of diy mechanics on cars over the years including replacing pads - do you think this exercise should be undertaken by a 'novice' given that this is the breaking system we are talking about!

Fred, I have been around long enough to know what I am doing Wink . I do my homework very well and I can tell you the spec pads I bought by TRW are the same spec as the factory.

If you buy TRW pads with Freelander 2, Volvo S80 and Ford Galaxy on fitment guide on the box, they are not the OEM spec. If you buy the TRW pads with Freelander 2 / LR2 on the fitment guide on the box, they are OEM spec. The serial number even matches those found in a genuine Land Rover box. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. It is a very easy job to do. So don't worry about trying it. My Insignia brakes were also very good. We have done about 100 miles on them now and they are bedding in quite nicely. They do have a good bite now, but this could be down to the fact that the last set were way past their best. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather.
