Oh and another question - why do you decide just for the drilled and not the grooved as well. I know the argument about grooved is that they wear down your pads quicker, Is this why you decided against them?

Grooved can be very noisy under hardish braking due to the grooves, but the main reason is that just like the look of the drilled.

They look like the Merc drilled discs which look good but without looking over the top. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Just ordered a complete set up from Mtec. So far I'm very impressed with their customer service.
I had a query on shipping as I want them for the weekend. Rang up and the phone was answered within a couple of rings.
They normally take 24hrs to ship and then the free shipping is RM 48hr. Next day delivery is an extra £5. Sat AM delivery is £15.
If you order online they are currently offering 10% off using code new10 at the checkout.
They needed to check stock availability as I have gone for the same finish as Mav.
They called me back within 20 minutes, confirmed availability and then honoured the 10% discount even though I was doing it over the phone.
So if it all goes to plan I'll have the new stuff tomorrow and can fit on Sunday. Smile

Very nice:

Question : When you have change the brakes have you tested in HD mode? as my understanding is that the brakes control the decent ,so my thinking is if this is a better brake system do's it improve HD mode.. Iain

Mav,
Yep went for the cross drilled in silver finish.
I'd like to tidy the calipers up too, but I'm not going to have time when I change the discs.
Maybe I'll save some pennies and get a new set from bigg red Smile

Crossed drilled?
I'm just sorting my sons 57 plate Merc SL500 supercar that has drilled discs from new.
.
At 62k the drilling a have rusted up to the point that they have fully blinded up. I'm carefully drilling the crud out.
.
So much for the air cooling!
.
Kind regards from Fred
PS the inner caliper pistons were 85% seized. It's taken many phone calls to find and buy replacement pistons. Merc originals are chrome plated aluminium and the chrome is peeling! 2010GS Auto ex Celeb, Santorini Black, 2011 facelift , spoiler, spats, mudflaps, LED footwell lamps, Witter detach,

Sounds like brakes that have not been looked after.

The SL500 is not a super car, not even close. Now talk SL55 AMG and your talking about a proper car. My brother in law had a 2009 SL500 and it was really disappointing. Was never in the same league as his previous 56 plate 55. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Hi Mav, interested in your brake work. I'm new to FL 2, so can I ask - hand brake shoes operate inside the disc? Discs fitted in usual way by cross head screw and caliper removal via Hex fitting? My hand brake is poor so I'm thinking as mentioned on other threads that it will be the adjusters that have seized a little

Good photos on your post by the way really clear.

Cheers,

John

Hi John, the hand brake is very easy to adjust. On the drum part of the rear disc, their is a plastic bung. Remove this and have the whole positioned at the back and you will see the adjuster. Slacken if off and remove the disc and see how it looks.

They are not re known for seizing up. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........
