It's like reading the Daily Mail; they get it all wrong too.

Looking at spy pictures is such a waste of time. They clearly aren't trying to hide the shape of the vehicle, just looking for publicity.
If they really wanted they would do something like this.

See how easy it is to hide the looks of a new car. Tata aren't stupid, they'd know how to disguise a car if they wanted to.

I wouldn't even mind that. Having considered both a new Evoque or a replacement LR2 but decided to instead wait for the 2015 Freelander that would be perfect.

It's pointless looking at the test mule for the shape of the new car at this stage, it's just to allow testing of the running gear.

The CB40- test mule for the original Freelander

Test mule for the Evoque just looks like a small Freelander

Because the car looks like an Evoque doesn't mean it will be one, the body clearly doesn't fit properly around the rear wheel arches. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

You gotta love the Maestro van version of the Freelander mule. Signs of things that came?

I work in many industries and a lot in the car industry. I get to hear a lot of stuff that the press just get plain wrong. It does make me smile when you see the press printing the stories about a future model, and then when the actual car is released, they have got it wrong.

All I can say is I share the info what I know and can state on here. There are some things I have seen that I would never put on a public forum.

After dealing with the car industry for so long, you get an insider understanding as well as to how it all works. It is not very often I get it wrong, and of course there is always the chance I might have this time. But I would say quite confidently that I haven't.

Is that based on knowledge or speculation? Or can't you say?

Because in the absence of knowledge it's an interesting question. The FL2 is, to all intents and purposes, a Ford (being based on their D-class platform as used by various Fords and Volvos). The Evoque is also loosely based on this platform. But with LR now divorced from Ford (and owned by a different car company) the possibility must have been examined of using a different, possibly completely new, platform for the FL3, and later for the Evoque 2. (As happened with FL1 -> FL2 when LR changed ownership previously.) This would seem particularly attractive if they do plan to use the same platform for FL3 and D5, as it's not obvious that EUCD is an appropriate platform for something like Discovery.

It would certainly be more interesting to see what LR could come up with if not constrained by an existing platform...

Interesting comment about the platform pab, unless a deal was made during the takeover. Who knows?
If the article that piattj refers to has any truth in it, the replacement could be very diffent.
It certainly bears out the o/p 'No more Freelanders'.

Personally, i'd like to see the name disappear. Although FL2 is entirely new, some perception of FL1 lingers. I suppose throw enough Censored at something and some is bound to stick. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

The article piattj refers to (which may, or may not, be correct, of course) seems to suggest that the high-end Discoveries will be based on the Range Rover (aluminium) platform. That would suggest the lower end models would be different, as that platform would seem too expensive for the lower end models. It also suggests that the price of the higher end models may be going up! Who knows.

I don't mind the Freelander name, although I suppose the Discovery name is more prestigious. I think the 'problem' with the FL2 is that people expect 'proper' off-roaders to look like the Defender, and because the FL2 looks nothing like they assume it's nothing like as capable and therefore underestimate it. Another reason why the Defender replacement should look like a Defender replacement!

I was recently amused by a passenger who was worried I might not be able to get out of a car park up a slope in about 6" of snow. She knew the car was a Land Rover, but because it doesn't look like a proper Land Rover she didn't seem to think it would act like one! Needless to say, we escaped the car park with no trouble at all! So in future all LRs should look like Defender!

The new Discovery will use the same D7u platform as the Rangies do. I fancy a small Disco, I had a D3 but it was too big for my needs, so if they can put everything that's in a Disco into a smaller package at a reasonable price, then I'll have a piece of that.

I like the Fl2 as its the element of surprise, everyone expects the Discos and Defenders to do what they do, but people are genuinely surprised when they see a Freelander doing what the good lord intended it to. I always say to the doubters they don't have a Land Rover badge on the grill for nothing, the hallmark of a better 4x4. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200
