I can only compare my SD4 with a previous TD4e but that one had a manual gearbox so difficult for me to give an honest side by side opinion. What I did notice is that the SD4 still has a little more 'grunt' left at the upper end of the rev range whereas the TD4 is very close but within a narrower band.

Must say I thought it might, just hope it doesn't end up in a fight! Thanks for your thoughts though.

You are probably being sensible whereas I put power over anything else, that's why I only had the TD4e for 4 months before losing money and getting a SD4, then I carried on losing .................................... like 6 points |

I have a manual TD4 now and having driven the SD4 i can say that when I change car it if its another Freelander it'll be an SD4. The auto is much nicer to drive and easier if your going to take it off road at all, and as the economy figures for the TD4 auto are pretty much the same as the SD4 so you might as well have the better engine.

If buying new then the SD4 is about £1000 more than the equivalent TD4 and for that you get from 0-60 1.8 seconds faster and have a 6mph higher top speed. |

Actually fuel consumption of SD4 and TD4 is the same. According to LR both do 40.4 on the combined cycle.
