SD4 or TD4 which is best?

This site has been a great help to me already n my search for a new Freelander 2.

I know the difference between the TD and SD engines on paper, but which is the best to go for when spec'ing the car would you say, assuming cost isn't an issue? Joanne

Not quite sure what you are asking Confused but why would anyone if given the choice choose a late model TD4 (150bhp) over the SD4 (190bhp) if cost was not an issue, unless you want a manual gearbox.

Sorry probably not clear. Put it this way then

Which is the better engine to go for as on paper they both have same emissions and consumption. Is the speed/acceleration increase in the SD4 worth the extra cost? As a layman it seems a small gain for the price, but I haven't driven either yet so I don't know if there is any comparison in day to day driving.

Hope that makes more sense. Joanne

I can only compare my SD4 with a previous TD4e but that one had a manual gearbox so difficult for me to give an honest side by side opinion. What I did notice is that the SD4 still has a little more 'grunt' left at the upper end of the rev range whereas the TD4 is very close but within a narrower band.

From a standstill I would imagine there is not a lot in it, but the SD4 will be ahead and have that extra when the other is running out of 'puff' although neither is slow with the same torque.

The engines are the same, just the state of tune and it's my opinion having driven and owned both but different gearboxes.

You know you've opened a can of worms here Laughing

Laughing Must say I thought it might, just hope it doesn't end up in a fight! Thanks for your thoughts though.

I've just seen a Dynamic for £1.5k less than the Xs I am looking at, both are MY13's but the Dynamic is a TD4, hence my question. Joanne

You are probably being sensible whereas I put power over anything else, that's why I only had the TD4e for 4 months before losing money and getting a SD4, then I carried on losing .................................... like 6 points Sad Laughing

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

TD4 Manual. 150bhp, 420Nm torque at 1750 rpm, 166g/km CO2 (VED G) Combined Fuel Economy 45.6mpg , 0-60mph 10.9 seconds

TD4 Auto, 150bhp, 420Nm torque at 1750 rpm, 185g/km CO2 (VED I), Combined Fuel Economy 40.4mpg, 0-60mph 10.5 seconds. Maximum speed 112.

SD4 auto, 190bhp, 420Nm torque at 1750rpm, 185g/km CO2 (VED I), Combined Fuel Economy, 40.4mpg, 0-60mph 8.7 seconds. Maximum speed 118.

The engine produces the same level of torque no matter which version you opt for. At the end of the day, the difference is the SD4 is slightly quicker from 0-60mph and has a slightly higher top speed and costs more.

If you plan to go offroad at all you need to take into account that the approach and departure angles are less in a Dynamic due to the body kit. Does look quite good though.

A very strange question.

Both TD4 and SD4 can be specced to the same level on all trims. The SD4 s quicker.

I have a manual TD4 now and having driven the SD4 i can say that when I change car it if its another Freelander it'll be an SD4. The auto is much nicer to drive and easier if your going to take it off road at all, and as the economy figures for the TD4 auto are pretty much the same as the SD4 so you might as well have the better engine.
Just my opinion Smile

If buying new then the SD4 is about £1000 more than the equivalent TD4 and for that you get from 0-60 1.8 seconds faster and have a 6mph higher top speed.

Actually fuel consumption of SD4 and TD4 is the same. According to LR both do 40.4 on the combined cycle.
Best I've had from an SD4 at work is 38 mpg on a run from Northamptonshire to Herefordshire driving at between 60 and 65 most of the way.
