An Italian tune up is to thrash it to within a millimetre of its life! The idea being that you blow all the cobwebs out ,possibly along with the valves!

If you are stupid enough to speed at 100mph on autoroutes I think you will find it will cost you a tad more than €400 nowadays. If you can't stump up the cash on the spot I think you might find your vehicle impounded. Go you Gendarmes!! John

I think 100 is pretty safe, especially at night. The vehicle confiscation thing only comes in at 50kmh over the limit which is about 110mph on the autoroute. I've always found Gendarmes pretty reasonable unless you take the mick and haven't had to pay up since 1988 returning from LeMans when they waited till they'd got a minibus full of us to drive to the nearest ATM. Then I was definitely taking the mickey, don't suppose the Union Jack be- decked Jag helped ! 2007 Freelander 2 2.2TD4 HSE manual (Hers)

It's worth noting that Metric/Imperial MPG will be different so comparing US to UK will be off.

Brimmed mine last week and just refilled it today. I did 303 miles and it took 54 litres to brim it again. I make that 25.4mpg which is what I expect for lots of short local journeys with a few runs out. That's pretty close to what the onboard computer said too. I would expect more on a long motorway run. I've added 500ml of 2 stroke oil this fill up just to see if it makes any difference mpg wise. Wifey reckons it costs twice as much in fuel than what our TDI Golf did. Wait till she finds out it costs £270 to tax compared to £100! Well, you don't buy a 4X4 for economy unless you are changing to a FL2 from a Disco 3 or RR Snort, do you? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Followed the forum advice and did an Italian tune-up. So with three tank fills I have got the following: 29.86 mpg 27.68 mpg And a trip from Farnham, Surrey to Manchester on Saturday and did 33.59 MPG I will post the return trip figures when I do the next top up although the computer was telling me we did 38.2MPG I never drove above 2,000 RPM or went above 72MPH on the Manchester trip so I guess one can improve on the 27-29MPG I was getting but one can hardly touch the acelerator and just Motorway driving with no stop/start. I giuess I will cancel my trip to the garage scheduled for this Tuesday. |

LATEST UPDATE: 4.546 litres to a gallon 13/2/13 Mileage 7437 put in 44.71 litres 21/2/13 Mileage 7772 put in 51 litres 29.86 MPG 9/3/13 Mileage 8156 put in 63.06 litres 27.68 MPG 16/3/13 Mileage 8427 put in 36.78 litres 33.59 MPG 18/3/13 Mileage 8646 put in 30.09 litres 33.08 MPG What is interesting that the trip computer showed 40.4MPG on the trip up versus real world measurement of topping up the tank brim to brim of 33.59MPG and on the way back down Manchester to Farnham trip computers howed 38.5MPG and actually it was 33.08. These figures were driving at no more than 71 MPH taken from a GPS and never over 2,000RPM. So still not convinced by other quotes of near the 40MPG figures. Now have to decide whether I get my LR garage to check it ? |

! have a brand new TD4 first tank gave 850 kls for 57 litres which in MPG = 42.6 three quarters of this was highway driving using cruise. I really could not believe this from a new car. Where will it be once run in.
