The projected range will be based on the avg mpg at the time of filling up, the trip computer doesn't know how much you paid at the pump

I suppose how the car burns the diesel will have a small factor in it, but not immediately, only when it's instant mpg is higher over time |

How does the trip computer know then, does a little man pop his head out of the tank, says that's dear fuel so you will go further |

It allso knows when it's traveling south ( downhill) as the average mpg is allways more than when travelling back north ( Uphill) |

The car does know what grade of fuel is being used but obviously not the price. I have ran V Power in mine constantly unless I get caught short, which is normally on holiday.

Even if branded fuel did give more mpg that's far too big a difference to be explained that way. I suspect a much simpler explanation. Expensive fuel is basically just less expensive fuel (no such thing as cheap fuel!) with additives. I suspect the lack of additives is allowing the fuel to froth up more, causing the pump to trip off before the tank is actually full. Thus, less fuel and less miles. |

If there is a case for one being different to another, I would put it down to the 'cetane number' where one is more efficient at combustion than the other requiring less throttle to do the same work.

the car will monitor the combustion of the fuel, and more expensive fuel will most likely to have better combustion, but when you restart the car after filling up the fuel lines will have cheapo fuel in still and its only driving it that will allow the car to know its running marginally better and from there increase the range in the tank on the display |

As far as I know the range is calculated based on the average fuel economy over the last 10 minutes to an hour depending on the car, so if you drove carefully up to the garage then the available range would show more after a fill up than if you drove it like you stole it |

Without going off topic, I just filled up at Shell Leamington this morning and put in 67.83 litres. The 'Range' still showed 8 miles before I decided to refuel, and given that it's only supposed to be a 68 litre tank, then something clearly isn't stacking up here. Surely you need some space between the tank and the Diesel that's in it? Or could it be a poorly calibrated Diesel Pump at the garage? Foraging near Gaydon....
