Cheers ey. My bottle doesn't say a5 anywhere on it but it's suitable for Audi and vw long life servicing so have mainly got it for that. If I need something else for the landy I will go buy it from the dealer.

I am really confused by what oil should be used. i have a MY11 with DPF. The handbook says use WSS-M2C913B but yet I look on websites and it is suggested that this is ok for non-DPF models but not for models with DPF. When it wa sin for a service it got " 5W-30 bulk WSS 913B" I have no idea what make this was, so I am non the wiser. I wish that I could have a simple explanation and guidance! There seems to be a move towards Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 but I want to move away from the main dealer ( who i dont think much of) and use a good local independent who I know use Shell Helix products. I don't know what Shell product I should get them to use. Why all this confusion? Thanks

If you have a DPF and you are "fond" of it, use a low SAPS oil (C1 type, 0.5% ash) like the one mentioned above.
The dealer, generally, doesn't care about your car like you do. And during the warranty period, which is quite short, the car will be fine with a non DPF oil. The irreversible degradation of the DPF will generally start to show after the warranty period.

As far as I can see from various threads, and yes it is confusing, you must have a C1 spec oil if you have a DPF, but this may not be suitable for non-DPF models. It's not altogether clear whether Land Rover understand this.

There are no modifications in the construction of the engine that has a DPF comparing to the one that hasn't. (other than the DPF system itself)
So, in my opinion, there is no restriction in using a low SAPS oil in a non-DPF engine as long as the DPF one works just fine with it.

Not sure I understood all of the stuff on that link, but interesting that low SAPS oil apparently helps keep the EGR valve clean and efficient.

SAPS (meaning Sulphated Ash, Phosphorous and Sulphur) are components that are contained into the oil itself and its additives. They have antiwear, antioxidant and detergent properties. Which is good.
On the other hand, during engine operation, a small part of the oil is, intentionally or not, burned into cylinders.
The byproduct result, in the case of Sulphated Ash, will clog the DPF quicker.
So, reducing Sulphated Ash in the composition of the oil will slow the clogging of the DPF in spite of lowering the above properties/qualities of the oil.

I have some Castrol magnatec 5w/30 A1, is this correct oil for my 2011 SD4 with DPF, it's due for its 1st service soon, how can I check if the dealer is going to use the right oil, should I supply my own?, why do they have to make things so difficult, bring back 20/50 for everything, so much easier.
