The concensus is that it should be C1. And how do you check what the dealer puts in - ask them???

Yep. I've always asked them to show me the service items and the oil bottles before the operations begin and then I've looked with my own eyes at each operation.

It may be me but I have looked on the Castrol UK website and cannot see Edge C1 listed, only Edge, On the oil check section it does not list the SD4 engine or specify different oil for the DPF engines, If I put my registration number in it comes up as not found, but it can find my old 2009 Freelander. Is all Castrol Edge C1?

Just dropped mine off for a service. The dealer has a notice posted up at the service desk - Castrol Edge C1 for DPF vehicles, Castrol Edge A4 (or similar, can't quite remember) for the others.

2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e S Manual Stornoway Grey

Bought 1litre of Mobil 1 ESP from my local landy garage for topping up. Said they use this on all the services. Cost 14 quid. Popped over the Audi garage and got she'll helix ultra avl 1 litre for 17 quid. Read the back of both bottles and basically the same. Could use the Mobil in the Audi and vice versa. Methinks specific oils for each manufacturer is a rip off as they must be all the same stuff in the bottle. The Mobil was safe with dpf vehicles although mine doesn't have dpf. Anyway, if anyone is interested halfords have 5l bottles of Mobil 1 ESP with 20% off so only £41.59. Might buy one and use it in both cars.

Just collected my vehicle after service. It has Castrol Edge A5 (sorry got it wrong from memory in previous post). The dealer uses Castrol Edge C1 for DPF cars. They say this is the manufacturer's recommendation.

I get that I should use a low SAP C1 oil for my March 2011 DPF freelander, however the handbook says nothing about this, the oil spec in the handbook is WSS-M2C913B, which is Magnatec A1 spec, if they have changed their recomendations for the oil grade why haven't they told the owners. Does this mean that it came from the factory with the wrong spec oil in it, have I been clogging upmy DPF for the last year?. If anyone can give me a definitive answer I would be very gratefull.

I agree..I also have a 2011 model with DPF and am confused about oil types. i think i shall write to LR Customer Service and ask! The manual with the car is pretty hopeless so it could easily just be wrong.

Today I went to 5 or 6 shops in order to buy oil for my car (non-DPF)
It seems that Magnatec A1 5W-30 it's no longer avaiable (for a few months now) and Edge A5 5W-30 is nowhere to be found.
Maybe you'll have better luck in finding one of these 2 in your country, but I think I'll try some olive one Laughing

Sounds like the shops in Romania haven't improved a lot since I was last there! If it's not available even in Bucharest, then maybe you could get one of those hundreds of Romanians who work in Italy or Germany to bring you some home one weekend?
Surely your Land Rover dealer should be able to provide it, although I hate to think what they would charge.

I don't think shops have a problem. I'd rather say that Castrol Romania has. If you access their site you can see they don't have that oil listed. I'm sure that the dealer can provide the appropiate oil, but I'm also sure the price is asking for is huge.
As for Romania, I'm sorry it didn't leave you with such a good impression, but I can assure you it's not as bad as you think (at least nowadays Wink )

Sorry -not trying to be rude about Romania. It was a few years ago that I was last there, and I suppose it was just very different! We were way out east in Isaccea. The town ran out of beer (50 thirsty students there for two months and they hadn't ordered any extra) and we basically had to drive to Tulcea for supplies. I had to buy diesel from the local fire station, and any local shopping expedition involved a trip round every shop to see whether they had what we needed. And on the way home I tried to shop in a Tesco but they wouldn't let me in without a membership card!
But the place was obviously changing fast - the slow organic economy that we claim to admire over here was rapidly "updating" itself, I fear, with the horses and carts giving way to fast Italian-registered cars.
Beautiful country, "interesting" shopping. Time I went back!

And you don't necessarily need Castrol - any oil of similar specification should do.

It seems that some shops sell a Ford branded oil

Apparently meets the WSS-M2C913-B spec
Have you ever used such oil?

If it's 5W30 and meets the spec it should be fine for a non-DPF car. If you have a DPF though you should really find something that is C1 spec. It would presumably have "suitable for DPF" or similar written on the label. sorry I can't be more helpful, but I don't have a DPF so I've not looked into this.
