England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey

TD4 2000 reg 130.000mls, in 10 years I had the clutch changed at 90.000, alternator at 115.000.
Electric Sunroof I gave up on after renewing 2 rails and took the fuse out. You dont need a sun Roof with Air-con.
to be honest I prefered it to this HSE big square box bundle of gismos any day,, that old FLR1 I could go anywhere with without worrying about scratches, far more manouverable and nippy about town though on long journeys the FLR2 comes into its own.
Dependes if you want armchair driving or excitement at the sharp end.
Also, no matter what goes wrong with the old model you can get 5 things fixed for the price of 1 on the new model. They may not go wrong so frequently but when they do it's to be hoped that the banks are still doing cheap interest rate loans!!!
FLR1 engine was a BMW derivative.
FRL2 engine is a load of Spanners rattling around in a Galvenised Watering can in comparison. Offset your Carbon emissions by boycotting Baked Beans and all Green Vegitables.

So why buy an FL2?
I'm bemused. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

I disagree with expencelander. The engine in the FL2 is smoother and more refined and of course more powerful. I owned a 55 plate FL1 TD4 and yes the engine was good but very underpowered and needed a 6th gear.

As for being nippy? Well it is a more compact vehicle that I must say was easier to reverse (being not so bulky) but the turbo took ages to kick in and the power came in one great lump as opposed to the broader spread of power in the new one. The gear change is very slick and a much shorter throw too.

Prices for fixing depends on what goes wrong obviously. HSE models have so many gizmos that it could indeed be very dear to repair. I have the GS which strikes a great balance between kit and price and there's nothing overly fancy to go wrong.

We had a manual Xreg(2000) diesel from new - complete bag of spanners, handed it back to the HP company after just over 2 years with 90K on the clock, with yet another clutch on the way out, and the IRD and rear diff making so much noise not even Queen at full volume could compete.
The experience was so bad I bought a Skoda Octavia to replace it.
Three trouble free years and 100k later, the Skoda replacement price had jumped to over £24k so I bought a 2006 Auto HSE. Shocked

Not exactly trouble free 2 1/2 years, but she did go down a quarry every day for 18 months, took us through Morrocco/Sahara and always got us home.

If you are going to go for a FL1, get it as late as possible, certainly post 2000, peferably post 2003. Watch the tax on 2006 auto as mine was £400 per year. Avoid petrol versions at all costs, and if you are going to even think about towing buy an auto. BMW TD4 was smooth & reliable, the sensors/electrics being the possible weakpoint.
There are some good tuning mods available, my 110bhp TD4 was 135bhp for most of it's life, but the torque was not in the same league as the FL2.

SWMBO prefered driving the smaller FL1 to the FL2, but prefers being chauffered in the FL2. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

I have an 07 plate FL1 done 32000 miles Thumbs Up

Rang owner before me who traded it in and he told me no problems when he had it Very Happy

I have had it almost 2 years and all it has cost me is £180 for new clutch master last year less 50% contribution from LR as it was just out of warranty. It has had replacement air con pipe last year under warranty and is still on original tyres.

It is fun and gone up in value since I bought it so I recommend it Bow down

It is no where near as comfortable as FL2, etc but for cheap 4wd practicality it is the best Cool

I have had more problems with my 2010 RRS Big Cry Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!
