We had a manual Xreg(2000) diesel from new - complete bag of spanners, handed it back to the HP company after just over 2 years with 90K on the clock, with yet another clutch on the way out, and the IRD and rear diff making so much noise not even Queen at full volume could compete.
The experience was so bad I bought a Skoda Octavia to replace it.
Three trouble free years and 100k later, the Skoda replacement price had jumped to over £24k so I bought a 2006 Auto HSE.
Not exactly trouble free 2 1/2 years, but she did go down a quarry every day for 18 months, took us through Morrocco/Sahara and always got us home.
If you are going to go for a FL1, get it as late as possible, certainly post 2000, peferably post 2003. Watch the tax on 2006 auto as mine was £400 per year. Avoid petrol versions at all costs, and if you are going to even think about towing buy an auto. BMW TD4 was smooth & reliable, the sensors/electrics being the possible weakpoint.
There are some good tuning mods available, my 110bhp TD4 was 135bhp for most of it's life, but the torque was not in the same league as the FL2.
SWMBO prefered driving the smaller FL1 to the FL2, but prefers being chauffered in the FL2. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner
