aircon problem

I have a intermitant fault with my aircon

It works all the time, but occassionally it produces a whirring noise, often when slowing down or when i have gone over a bump

I know its the aircon as I done a process of illimination and the noise stops when i press the eco/off button.

The dealer couldn't find fault and when i asked him what would happen if the aircon unit failed or possible the pully roller which i think it whats vibrating

I did not get a straight answer, just the it's never happened before on a freelander 2 so i could say

when i pointed out to him I know what my engine sounds like and it clearly makes a noise, i have been told to monitor it for the remaining warranty period, as it will only get worse if its faulty

So what does happen if it goes pop? Is the worst that can happen my aircon just stops working or will it cause my engine to blow......... Question Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Nick the air-con does not have anything to do with the engine at all it is a seal system on its own and you will only loose your cooling on the heater system which could be a problem if its 70 or 80 degrees but i dont think so looking at the weather outside today Whistle 07my Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Baltic Blue,Privacy Glass,Ebony black leather,Land rover detachable towbar,S/S Side bars,Climair wind deflectors,Bramble Rash,

I know the aircon is a serparate unit

which is normally powered by a belt, which engages when the aircon is required

I presume it means that if it fails it will just stop working, but also wonder what happen if the belt jumps off and gets mangled in with the other belts or engine etc Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

then if your belt jumps off and becomes entangled with the other belts you could overheat and loose your power steering is your air con cold if not it could have leaked out as the gas also carries oil to lube the pump it could have gone dry? 07my Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Baltic Blue,Privacy Glass,Ebony black leather,Land rover detachable towbar,S/S Side bars,Climair wind deflectors,Bramble Rash,

When you press the Econ button, the compressor is disengaged.
If the sound stops, then could be at least three problems:
1. The compressor's clutch could slip during normal operation (generating the sound), so when disengaged, the sound dissapear because the clutch is no longer energized.
2. The accessories belt is loose (tensioner problem) and when dissengaged, the compressor doesn't absorb any more power, the belt doesn't slip anymore and the sound dissapear.
But if the belt is loose, you should feel problems with the steering too.
3. Compressor's bearings are worn. Off course, when Econ pressed, no power drive to compressor, no sound.

This sounds like a con, monitor it until its out of warranty, then come to us and we'll charge you for fixing it.

Same problem with Mine - booked in for a new compressor fitting (under warranty) tomorrow - along with new locking wheel nuts and B-pillar seat belt panels + Hand brake adjustment (again)

What I don't understand is this. Doesn't the 'Economy' button just turn off the climate control and leave the air con on - surely 'Off' turns the air con off completely but leaves the heating etc to work? If this is the case then why doesn't the noise stay on when air con on 'Economy'?

Confused Confused ? That will be me! There's always a way forward!

Economy = max 5% aircon duty cycle i.e. still active to dry the air but minimal impact upon mpg

Well thats a lot clearer - why don't they put this detail in the manuel? Thumbs Up

There seems to be quite a few features built into the car that aren't documented at all - If you don't know its there how can you use it? In fact why bother putting it in the car in the first place? Am I the only one thinking this? There's always a way forward!

Sorry about this, but you are wrong.
When you press ECON, the AC compressor is disabled 100%. (at least on all cars that I've owned)
And FL2 is no exception.

So, CG and Pinky are right. (The order is pure alphabetical, no offence... Laughing Laughing )

And to prove my words, here is what LR says, on page 12.

In fact there you'll find all the info needed about Climate Control System.
