Not quite, the aircon is still active up to 5% to provide dried air to the cabin, this is to prevent misting on the windows. clearly, this will be less effective when there is a 5% ceiling but in the main, with single person occupancy and no wet clothes / dogs in the car it should be OK

Sorry if I seemed to be too vehement. It was not my intention. In fact, I believe that the progress can be made from different polemics. 10forcash, sorry if I offended you in any way...
Back to the issue: It turns off the air conditioning _compressor_ and not the whole system. The system still works but it's struggling to do the work without the AC compressor's benefits (cooled and dried air). From here the "ECON" word, because the compressor consumes energy and economy can be made by deactivating it when it's not needed. The confussion may be (when you read quickly) in: air con. (air conditioning system) <=> air comp. (A/C - air compressor). |

Nick, did your air con become more problematic or did the problem clear itself. Why I ask is, I run my air con year round and just recently the noise that you mentioned in your original post is exactly what i'm experiencing and when I turn the air con off the noise stops instantly. |

are you sure its not a loose condenser fan mount ! behind the rad ! only runs when ac is on ! unless engine is very hot.

Remember, even if you've got the air con switched on, you need to turn the temperature switch down down to activate it properly. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice. |

It could be that pegleg but it is very intermittent at the moment and we all know what the dealer will say. I will let it manifest itself a bit more with the bit of summer we are experiencing and having warranty till march 2013. |

Interesting to read this thread on noisy aircon. Recently I have noticed mine was getting noisIer, and again noise only heard when aircon fully on, not in"econ" mode. Took mine to an aircon specialist who said it was most likely low gas levels. A quick connect to their system which removed the old gas (just 315g left), checked for leaks and refilled with the correct amount of gas,730g, and my system has gone quiet again...and gets much colder. This regas cost just £40 apparently the gas just seeps out naturally over time and that aircon systems should be serviced and topped up every 18 months but never are. |

Thanks XTD5 that gives me another option. Does anybody know if npinks got to the bottom of his aircon problem? |

I have had the same problem with my aircon but living in South Africa it is much a bigger worry to me as we use the aircon on a daily basis!

If you had an accident, then the gas probably escaped forcefully. In the process, it took with it a part of the AC system's oil.

My system did not "leak" after the accident allthough they had to regass the system due to fitting a new condensor. I did not know about the il in the system. Does this run with the gas through the condensor and aircon pump?
