i was just looking on autotrader at fl2 prices ; with autotrader you can get running costs ; the quoted fuel consumption figures are pure fiction ; how an earth Land Rover can get away with it ; they are way off the mark

Manufacturers use a rolling road to measure fuel consumption, which obviously doesn't have hills or wind resistance.

What do they quote for MPG, as I get close to the combined cycle listed in my handbook.  Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Its not just JLR -its all manufactures. These figures are based on standardised tests designed by the testing organisations not the manufacturer. Its not just about MPG its also about pollution (CO2 and NOx)

The tests put the engine through different simulated driving scenarios on a static test bed. They are not really designed to represent real world driving - that varies so much its impossible to cover that in a few test scenarios.

Some unscrupulous car makers (VW, Audi, Porsche, Skoda, Seat, & Mercedes) have in the past deliberately engineered their cars to perform better under the tests than in real life - they have faced huge fines as a result + more because their cars are much more polluting than customers were lead to believe (especially NOx).

I guess the manufacturers work with the testing organisations in designing the comparative tests and as there is no laws to simulate a "boy racer" etc they produce tests scenarios which show the vehicles in the best light. Jules

36 MPG at best on a steady run, 30-32 local driving. not great but it is a 2.5 tonne 4X4.

As I said 30-32 real world MPG.

I drive gentle but get around 43-46 mpg according to the dashboard. Most of my driving is motorway based and cruise along at 60 ish.

I believe that when a manufacturer measures engine HP and torque they do it on a bench with a dynamometer and with no alternator or aircon or gearbox or anything else that isn't necessary to make it go. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

BHP is normally quoted at the flywheel, torque is somewhat different as it can increase due to gearing but hopefully it is at the flywheel then with an auto in low gear it is much higher at the wheels my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I manage to get 7.8L/100km (36.2 mpg) with a petrol engine with a 500kg payload, the spare wheel, awning & other stuff in the roof, wind deflectors & mud flaps.

Over the almost 10 years I have averaged about 39mpg. Quite happy with that

thats very good. Jules

cruising along the motorway i get 28mpg, around town 18, if i floor it about 9. Common sense isn't very common.
