I think that it will be many years before we know the true impact of all these batteries that we are producing. Smartphones, laptops, tablets, EV's. Until recently Telsa were not responsibly disposing on their batteries.

We will start to see people keeping their cars for much longer, a lot less goes wrong with an EV and safety has improved so much. There's less reasons for people to buy a new car.

The batteries last longer that most people think. The old Nissan Leafs and early Tesla's that have over 100k miles on them will still charge to 85%+.

In a few years, instead of changing the whole car, maybe we will just be changing the batteries every 10 years.

I have a new Nissan leaf, it's a dream. I suggest to anyone who has a 2 car household or can afford 2 cars to get an EV as your daily car, it's completely different way of driving, I love it.

My first car was 25 year old, I had it for 17 years. Second car I had for 18 years. Current car 4.5 years old with 49,000 km of which only 8,000 km is in the city. Otherwise it is the Kimberleys, Bungles etc!

We try to walk everywhere to not use the car. But as a result we need extra lobsters, champagne & single origin coffee flown into Australia for the extra calories we consume due to all the physical exercise!

We have recently put 3 phase in the garage to charge the 2 scooters or wheelchairs which we will need in a few years! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

A new electric car will not charge the battery to its full capacity. They limit it to about 80%. As the battery ages it is gradually charged to a higher percentage, to the age the life was designed for. So the battery appears to have the same capacity up until that point in time. Then it is downhill.

Batteries in satellites use a very narrow range of the charge/discharge range, about 5% of the capacity so they last as long as possible. As they are very expensive or simply impossible to replace. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

When i was last in Oz there was much talk of an impending power shortage and Musk had recently supplied a huge battery array for storing mains electricity for use during peak demand. Also it was muted that "old" EV car batteries could be used for storing electricity on domestic premises as the current required is much lower in a house than in a car. This would extend the life of the EV battery well beyond that required by EVs themselves. Jules

I reckon Land Rovers must the greenest vehicles out there.
[there, that's the Greenies upset] Laughing

Once manufactured, owners tend to keep them longer.
Whilst Mr Toyota driver [etc] must get the latest model every 1 to 2 years.

Land Rovers are more 'fixable' than the standard euro/jap boxes.
Thererfore they are on the road far longer than 'normal' cars.

& you think you have problems with brexit.

The people are getting on & doing what they can with solar & batteries.

Caravan owners have air conditioning, induction cookers, cappuccino machine & large fridges running off solar & batteries.

But it's all too difficult for the politicians so they keep pushing kerosene lamps, whale oil cookers & coal heating for the home! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Lightwater - the fossil fuel lobby seem very powerful politically in Oz. Its a pity as you have so much potential for green energy - wind and sunshine by the bucket full Jules

I hope you are right, but the cynic in me sees a different scenario. There is no way the manufacturers will let users have a long cost-free association with a wholly-owned vehicle. At the very least we will only have a lease on the operating software and pay for frequent upgrades. The PCP approach where you never actually own a vehicle is already becoming the norm and will be replaced by pay-as-you-go schemes and car clubs. It will have a big (and largely negative) impact on those of us who buy cheap and run older vehicles as we will be dragged screaming into the expensive, new-car operating model, or the driverless Uber. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Euro6 and beyond is going to make used diesel car motoring very frustrating anyway Im afraid, and/or cause a boom in remaps chips and dpf/adblu delete services.

Then it will be hard to buy a used diesel knowing 100% that its legal. At work

On the EV front. The Tesla 3 UK prices have recently been announced on their website. You now know what you're ordering.

The base model starts from £38k. It's competitively priced.

Right now, I can't think of any other every day car that I would rather own than a model 3. It's the perfect sporty saloon for smaller European roads. The model S and X were too big and expensive.

I've just ordered the long range option.
