My first car was 25 year old, I had it for 17 years. Second car I had for 18 years. Current car 4.5 years old with 49,000 km of which only 8,000 km is in the city. Otherwise it is the Kimberleys, Bungles etc!

A new electric car will not charge the battery to its full capacity. They limit it to about 80%. As the battery ages it is gradually charged to a higher percentage, to the age the life was designed for. So the battery appears to have the same capacity up until that point in time. Then it is downhill.

When i was last in Oz there was much talk of an impending power shortage and Musk had recently supplied a huge battery array for storing mains electricity for use during peak demand. Also it was muted that "old" EV car batteries could be used for storing electricity on domestic premises as the current required is much lower in a house than in a car. This would extend the life of the EV battery well beyond that required by EVs themselves. Jules |

& you think you have problems with brexit. The people are getting on & doing what they can with solar & batteries. Caravan owners have air conditioning, induction cookers, cappuccino machine & large fridges running off solar & batteries. But it's all too difficult for the politicians so they keep pushing kerosene lamps, whale oil cookers & coal heating for the home! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device! Lightwater - the fossil fuel lobby seem very powerful politically in Oz. Its a pity as you have so much potential for green energy - wind and sunshine by the bucket full Jules |

I hope you are right, but the cynic in me sees a different scenario. There is no way the manufacturers will let users have a long cost-free association with a wholly-owned vehicle. At the very least we will only have a lease on the operating software and pay for frequent upgrades. The PCP approach where you never actually own a vehicle is already becoming the norm and will be replaced by pay-as-you-go schemes and car clubs. It will have a big (and largely negative) impact on those of us who buy cheap and run older vehicles as we will be dragged screaming into the expensive, new-car operating model, or the driverless Uber. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto Previously: 2010 MY FL2 TD4e GS - Now gone at 199,500 miles, about 135,000 of them mine. ‘93 Defender 110 200TDi CSW ‘87 Defender 90 4 cyl Petrol ‘83 110 CSW V8 - best ever! Euro6 and beyond is going to make used diesel car motoring very frustrating anyway Im afraid, and/or cause a boom in remaps chips and dpf/adblu delete services.

On the EV front. The Tesla 3 UK prices have recently been announced on their website. You now know what you're ordering.
