This thread reminds me very much of the situation in the early 80's when Ford bought out the Sierra and everyone still wanted to buy a Cortina. The description "Jelly Mould" was often applied to the Sierra which is very much the case with the current JLR range. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I agree and apparently the other manufacturers wanted to go down the same route for mainly aerodynamic reasons but didn't have the market clout to make it happen so waited for Ford to do it. I had one on 1983 as a company car and it was a good motorway cruiser but got a lot of negative comments as it was such a departure from current styling norms. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

True, it was a rather bold move styling wise, but proved to be the right direction as everyone else followed.

I remember Bob Lutz (it was his baby) told me the biggest fault with the Sierra was the Blue oval badge on the hood

Around Lommel it out handled the best of the BMWs at the time, they were our handling benchmark. Regards

Although, like the FL2 to the DS, the Sierra was replacing a much loved car with something that no one had asked for. The Sierra pushed the boundaries in the way that Ford thought was the future and I’d argue it wasn’t.

It was aerodynamic, for sure, but that was nothing new. The Citroen CX has been there before, the contemporary Audi 100 destroyed the Sierra’s 0.34 with a 0.30 and many cars have beaten it out of sight since, without looking so odd. The Calibra was around 0.26 and even the Rover 800 was around 0.28.

The early Sierra looked odd then and it looks odd now. It got better as it was reworked over time and things like a 3 door Cosworth look great but, as a Mk1, with flush wheels trims, suspended door mirrors and a 3 slat grille - oh dear!
