Is the driving position a lot lower in the Discovery Sport? Top end FL2 are the same price as the same year Discovery Sports at some independents.

I had a DS as a loan car recently and the driving position is significantly lower than the Full Fat and I don’t remember the FL2 being much lower than the Fatty. It would be a no brainer to go for a late FL2 if a DS isn’t significantly cheaper 👍

yes and no.

The lesser DS (D150 & D180) have haldex similar to the FL2 - the DS and later Ewoks have generation 5.
PTU from gearbox transfers power via the propshaft to the Haldex unit close coupled to rear differential

The D240 DS have a very different system this system has a coupling before the propshaft that disconnects the propshaft - thus saving power when not in use. The rear differential is also very different with two clutch packs - one for each rear drive shaft, so in theory it is possible to divert a specific amount of power split front to rear and then left to right on the rear axle.

As you can tell I have a D240

The rear "differential" is a GKN twinster unit, the front is a GKN Active connect system. Apparently it has the capability of locking the rear differential - wasted completely wasted on a buffoon like me, but it doesn't spin the wheels no matter how hard I try, and doesn't get stuck on cross axle situations, so as far as I am concerned it works. Downside, when it does eventually die (and it will) Bell Engineering are unlikely to come to the rescue. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Sounds like a ridiculous piece of overengineering and unnecessary complication and makes me wonder why they need to go down that route. No doubt this will soon be replaced by an electric motor or two in the rear axles that cuts in when rear drive is required. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

The twinster has and electric option, ditch the propshaft, and you get front wheel drive through the engine, rear wheel drive through the electric motor. In reality we don't use 4x4 for extended periods, so a small battery, and part time 4x4 makes sense.

And yes it looks like at some time in the future this stopgap option is going to cost me a small fortune Evil or Very Mad Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

It looks like it has a limited slip clutch on each rear drive shaft, for years vehicles have been fitted with LSD and give no issues so maybe, just maybe LR haven’t messed with them too much and they will work. Regards

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

Please let me know if anything in my post offends you, as I may wish to offend you again......

Don't know what's going on with FL2 prices but the approved used website is showing 5 vehicles at £17.5k - £21k. I bought my 2014 XS for £18k four years ago and prices seem about the same now even with higher mileages. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Tell me about it-not just the prices that are a problem but the quality of the vehicles. I have been looking for a few months now. Most have pretty poor service history or are way overpriced. I resigned myself to paying over the odds to find someone else had bought the one I had settled on. Used approved is no guarantee. I have enquired about a few. 20,000 miles between services and missing services seems to be the norm. Apparently FL2 is the most searched for car on Autotrader👍

Ireland

As a comparison, I bought my 2013 xs with 90000miles in March for 12500 euro.
It is a uk import and although it didn't come with a service history prior to being in Ireland.

The estimated Autotrader prices for mine are still going up.

Now suggesting Private Sell at £17k and Part Exchange at £15.5k. (that is about £1.5k more than 12 months ago)

I paid £23.5k for it in 2017, just under 3 years old, 16k miles, Full LR Service History and 2 Year LR Warranty.

The present suggested Autotrader Dealer Price is £18 - £20K, if these increases keep going on it will soon be worth more than I paid. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

The disadvantage of 'stand alone' electric motors driving rear wheel is that all that lovely main engine torque can never reach the rear wheels when needed. The 'clutch driven' differential shown in picture above appears to be able to send full engine torque to either or both rear wheels. Handy if towing on rough ground - say recovering a boat for example. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I think you are underestimating the immediate torque available from an electric motor and also how independently controllable it can be. Just look at the 0-60 times for Teslas and Porsche Taycan. A fully electric 4WD vehicle with a motor on each wheel would be the ultimate off road vehicle, forget diffs and gearboxes. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
