For me, there will only be 2 candidates for PM so that means a choice between them. I characterise them ...one lot don't realise that the taxes raised & money spent is OUR money and they feel they know best about everyone's private life so they don't get my vote. That leaves only one serious choice unless you have a marginal seat where tactical voting comes into play.

The last thing this country needs is a referendum on Europe, its giving a vote to halfwit ass es without a brain that could break this country. At least they won't bother to step outside of their house to vote in this election but a referendum could be done online. |

Corr who needs democracy eh? Don't trust the electorate they will vote for the wrong thing. Sounds like something Tony Blair would say...ooooh.

And there's your proof right there! The electorate voted for Tony Blair, more than once. Democracy is hugely flawed, precisely because most people don't have a clue. Problem is, most other forms of government are at least equally flawed. |

Hmm The ones with a brain have already broken it. As regards the referendum, I believe it is right to have one, it may just help engage some of those dimwits in having a say in what happens and make them feel a part of this country once again. Of course, leaving Europe would be a bad move and most likely will not happen, the Conservative government will give the people a say on the matter, if we vote to come out of Europe, then I imagine that rather than exit we will be 'seen' to stay in on the back of sweeteners and cash incentives that the Conservatives will use as a victory, I think they call it win win. |

I started work in the 1970's during the various miner strikes, BL strikes, 3 day week etc and I recall someone saying that "what this country needs is a benign dictator". Then Margaret Thatcher came along..... 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Benign dictatorships can work very well, but all too many benign dictators fall victim to the old adage that 'absolute power corrupts absolutely'! |

Yes I guess it is the power that corrupts.

65% turned out to vote in the last election, we can assume that those who voted held an interest in what political party would govern this country and what their manifesto was. Can we safely assume that the other 35% had no interest in getting out of bed to vote and would only voice their opinion afterwards by uttering a few unintelligible words, its this 35% that could hold sway a critical referendum vote |

I think we need to revisit the idea of PR in some form. First past the post was fine and dandy when there were only two parties with realistic numbers voting for them. I don't think that will return in the UK. We need a system that allows the substantial minorities to be represented. We also need to stop Scottish and Welsh MPs voting on English issues. I don't object to them devolving any powers they want to their own assemblies but once that's done then they should have no say in those matters in Westminster.

The EU has a big say in trade issues (free movement of goods for example) and civil issues with various consumer regulations but it hasn't taken over the criminal justice system. Human Rights is another matter and the papers naturally put their own spin on that subject. In any case, the EU is a big issue for the parties to wrangle over.
