On the point of NHS privatisation, just remember that the NHS staff deliver healthcare but that every item they use from a bandage to drugs to an MRI scanner has been produced by the private sector who (especially in the case of drug companies) have to take huge financial risks to develop their products. For the staff there are a lot of vested interests (unions) involved which often stand in the way of innovation in service delivery. For "save our NHS" read "save our jobs".

For me, there will only be 2 candidates for PM so that means a choice between them. I characterise them ...one lot don't realise that the taxes raised & money spent is OUR money and they feel they know best about everyone's private life so they don't get my vote. That leaves only one serious choice unless you have a marginal seat where tactical voting comes into play.
Re Europe, I've worked with colleagues all across Europe & travelled a lot across Europe. I have been a fan of the EU and the friendship of nations but I believe it's going / gone too far and is turning into a superstate that I don't like the look of.So a chance to vote in a referendum appeals. ...

Be true to yourself. That way happiness lies...

The last thing this country needs is a referendum on Europe, its giving a vote to halfwit ass Censored es without a brain that could break this country. At least they won't bother to step outside of their house to vote in this election but a referendum could be done online.

Corr who needs democracy eh? Don't trust the electorate they will vote for the wrong thing. Sounds like something Tony Blair would say...ooooh.

When you can't trust any politician to represent the views of the people that elected them then a referendum is the only way forward..ask the people who elected them! Unfortunately MPs will override the views of those that elected them for the sake of their own political ambition and those of their party - a rotten system.

And there's your proof right there! The electorate voted for Tony Blair, more than once. Democracy is hugely flawed, precisely because most people don't have a clue. Problem is, most other forms of government are at least equally flawed.

Hmm Confused The ones with a brain have already broken it.

As regards the referendum, I believe it is right to have one, it may just help engage some of those dimwits in having a say in what happens and make them feel a part of this country once again. Of course, leaving Europe would be a bad move and most likely will not happen, the Conservative government will give the people a say on the matter, if we vote to come out of Europe, then I imagine that rather than exit we will be 'seen' to stay in on the back of sweeteners and cash incentives that the Conservatives will use as a victory, I think they call it win win.

I started work in the 1970's during the various miner strikes, BL strikes, 3 day week etc and I recall someone saying that "what this country needs is a benign dictator". Then Margaret Thatcher came along..... 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Benign dictatorships can work very well, but all too many benign dictators fall victim to the old adage that 'absolute power corrupts absolutely'!

Yes I guess it is the power that corrupts.

It is difficult, if not impossible, for one person to represent the views of those in their constituency. Especially when the party that the elected person belongs to hold more sway than the electorate. At least referenda do allow the true voice of the electorate to be heard. Politics is not complicated but those that value their livelihood and power from it believe us mere mortals could not comprehend it...how wrong!

65% turned out to vote in the last election, we can assume that those who voted held an interest in what political party would govern this country and what their manifesto was. Can we safely assume that the other 35% had no interest in getting out of bed to vote and would only voice their opinion afterwards by uttering a few unintelligible words, its this 35% that could hold sway a critical referendum vote Rolling Eyes

I think we need to revisit the idea of PR in some form. First past the post was fine and dandy when there were only two parties with realistic numbers voting for them. I don't think that will return in the UK. We need a system that allows the substantial minorities to be represented. We also need to stop Scottish and Welsh MPs voting on English issues. I don't object to them devolving any powers they want to their own assemblies but once that's done then they should have no say in those matters in Westminster.

The real problem is the damned EU. They've ruined our fishing and farming industries, have largely taken over our justice system and are bleeding us dry with our contributions to a budget that has been fraudulently mismanaged for years. We need to get out, and quickly.

Having said all that, I'm still undecided - in percentage terms I'm about 60% UKIP, 40% Conservative. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto
Tricia's - 2006 Royal Blue Beetle Cabriolet Auto

The EU has a big say in trade issues (free movement of goods for example) and civil issues with various consumer regulations but it hasn't taken over the criminal justice system. Human Rights is another matter and the papers naturally put their own spin on that subject.

In any case, the EU is a big issue for the parties to wrangle over. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby
