Keyless thefts of Range Rovers

I heard on the news today that Police in Kensington are to stop every new Range Rover they see to see if its been stolen! All to do with the keyless entry system. I reckon that's going to take up a fair amount of police time! Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Seems rather unnecessary. If the owner reports it stolen to the police, it is quickly entered as such onto the PNC so that traffic officers will know it is stolen when their ANPR system reads the plate.

Of course, crims could fit false plates but the aforementioned method seems drastic and perhaps exaggerated by the press. I assume LR have issued a statement about this theft issue... LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

The owner has to know its been stolen first! Could be parked up whilst owner goes shopping? Lots of house breakers (burglars ) steal the keys and then steal the car whilst occupiers asleep. Some times house owner discovers their house has been broken into, contact the police but don't realise car keys are missing. The house breakers return the following night and steal the car. A great number of people leave car keys on a table just inside their front door. A simple pole with a hook through the letter box and keys gone along with car Surprised

Range Rover Free-For-All

Where I work Range Rovers are getting stolen hand over fist at the moment. They are all keyless entry / start models, ie the owners still have both keys when they wake up and find their driveway empty.

Also hearing that some insurance companies are refusing to insure RRs unless the risk is shared on another policy!

Without going into details it's fair to say that other keyless systems are vulnerable too but in a city of around 250,000 people we're losing about one RR a day at the moment - that's all they seem to be interested in.

It's happening to BMW's and Audi's etc. and fast Fords such as the Focus RS, Focus ST and Fiesta ST. Stolen to order by professionals as opposed to the local scrotes.

I've heard of a number of fellow ST owners that have had their Fiestas stolen and I've seen the video of how it's done. Typically they use a spark plug to punch a hole in the corner of the drivers window near the wing mirror which doesn't set off the alarm as its in a black spot for the sensors.

Then they reach in with a special device, open the OBD port just below the wheel and plug the device in. Within 10 seconds the doors unlock and in they get. They then program a new key/fob device in less than 30 seconds from the port and off they go.

Unlike BMW's that I have read about, I have been able to remove the fuse that powers the port without it compromising anything else. I also purchased an old school Disklock as a general deterrent.

Some owners have invested in the VIPER alarm system which defeats this method of theft. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

A relatively easy fix, or at least hinderence, would be to not have the OBD port permanently 'on'...

Are they going to employ more staff to do this I wonder? Can't see the point of that as the car may get stolen an hour after it has been stopped. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

One of my cars is a Ford Fiesta ST2 Hot Hatch. That has keyless entry/start etc & they are going walk abouts in droves particularly in South Essex. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

Remove your original OBD socket and hide it behind a panel/cable tie it up behind the dash... Then go to a scrappy and cut one out of another car and refit it in your now absent hole

You could even wire said replacement up backwards so it fry's would be thieves computer equipment Whistle

Just remember to NEVER plug in an IID or service equipment to your dummy rig Thumbs Up

The above is from FFRR

I do like the idea of sending a voltage back down the dummy port. 240v, to be exact..

My sister spoke to LR about this issue on her evoke. They advised her to get an auto electrician to extend the OBD to a concealed place in car ! She's subsequently installed a tracking device.
